Algernon Lyons

Sir Algernon McLennan Lyons GCB (26 August 1833 - 9 February 1908) was a British Admiral of the Fleet.

Early life

Born in Satara, India, Lyons was the second of three sons of Humphrey Lyons, a Lieutenant-General in the Indian (Bombay) Army, and of Eliza Bennett.

Career

Lyons joined the Royal Navy in 1847 and saw service in the Crimean War, where he was appointed flag-lieutenant to his uncle, Sir Edmund Lyons, later first Baron Lyons of Christchurch. Following the war, he led a distinguished career, which included appointments as Commander-in-Chief in the Pacific, North America and the West Indies and Plymouth (1893). From 1895 to 1897 he served as First and Principal Naval Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria.

In 1889, Lyons was created a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (KCB), and in 1897 was elevated to Grand Commander (GCB). On August 23, 1897, he was promoted Admiral of the Fleet. He was also a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Glamorganshire.

Lyons married Louisa Jane Penrice (1853-1935) of Kiborough, near Swansea, Glamorgan, the sole heiress of her father, Thomas Penrice (1820-1897) and they had two sons and two daughters.

He died at Kiborough in 1908.
