Nicolas Rémy Maire
Nicolas Rémy MAIRE b. 1800 in Mirecourt (Vosges) d. 1878 in Paris French archetier / bow maker.
He trained in the Lafleur workshop also is said to have served his apprenticeship in the workshop of PAJEOT in Mirecourt, and his style will remain close to PAJEOT'S. He opened his own workshop in Mirecourt in 1826. Then left Mirecourt in 1853 to go and work in Paris. Beside his own production he worked for GAND, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume and Georges Chanot as well. He was very much under the influence of PECCATTE during the 1850's (Maire's bows are very similar to those of Dominique Peccatte from this period) and then went on to a lighter model after 1860 (as many other makers of his time). He did not always stamp his bows. Amongst his students wa Jean Joseph Martin.
His work varies in style but is consistently of fine craftsmanship.
"Maire (as a maker) is a favorite amongst many soloists and chamber musicians" - Gennady Filimonov
