The Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (Template:Lang-sd) informally shortened as Mehran University (abbreviated MUET) is the largest engineering degree-awarding institution in Pakistan. It is located in the university township of Jamshoro in the Sindh province of Pakistan.it was ISO 9000 certified in 2003.The university has three faculties with 17 disciplines.

History

Since its independence in 1947, Pakistan had picked up speed in industrial and technological development since particularly during the sixties and seventies as constitutions were being reformed in the country's interests. Development reforms largely focused on the enhancement of agriculture, establishment and upgrade of industries, and exploration of its indigenous resources. This resulted in an increased demand for qualified engineers in different fields in comparison with other professions. In order to meet this demand and to provide an opportunity of engineering-oriented higher education to the people hailing from the interior Sindh, Sindh University Engineering College was established in 1963 as a constituent college of University of Sindh in Jamshoro.

The Education Policy of 1972[1] provided for upgrade of the college to the level of a university catering engineering and technology. Accordingly, the college was first declared as an additional campus of the Sindh University and was headed by a pro-vice-chancellor in July 1976 and later upgraded to the level of a fully fledged independent university on 1st March 1977 through an ordinance issued by the Government of Sindh. The ordinance was later converted into an act of the Provincial Assembly of the Sindh Province. The new university was named "Mehran University of Engineering and Technology". Significant contributions have been made to the establishment of the institutions by the first vice-chancellor of the university, Dr. Shamsuddin M. Qureshi.[2]

The first university campus was established in Nawabshah to commemorate its status upgrade demanding that the operations of the university be shifted out of Jamshoro. However, in a subsequent act in 1979, the seat of the university was retained at Jamshoro to relieve the burden of shifting operations. A constituent college was formed of the campus named "Mehran University College of Engineering and Technology" catering the educational needs of the upper Sindh. As of 1996, the college was made into an independent university and given the name "Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering Sciences and Technology".

Consequently, Mehran University now exists only at Jamshoro, having territorial jurisdiction over the divisions of Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas of the Sindh Province. Nevertheless, a few seats are still reserved for the candidates coming from other regions of the province.

Organisation

Administration

The university comprises of three faculties and seventeen disciplines. The faculties include that of engineering (general), a faculty of electrical, electronic and computer engineering, and a faculty of architecture and planning, all three encompassing the given disciplines: information technology; electrical, computer systems, software, electronic,[3] telecommunication,[3] biomedical,[3] industrial, mechanical, metallurgy and materials, mining, petroleum and natural gas, textile, chemical, civil engineering; architecture, and city and regional planning.

The faculties are headed by the vice chancellor and the teachers and professors form the Mehran University Teachers' Association (MUTA) while the Mehran University Student Alumina (MUSA) governs the student body.

Teaching

The university ranks as the finest engineering degree-awarding institutions in the country and even attracts foreign students, mostly from South Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries. Mehran University offers both undergraduate bachelor's, bachelor's honours and postgraduate master's degree courses. The postgraduate courses were started in 1978 leading up to an ME degree and are taught in the evenings.

Research

Mehran University is renowned for its research initiatives especially in the recent years. It has been publishing the quarterly Mehran University Research Journal of Engineering and Technology (MURJ) regularly since January 1982 which has been recognized world over and is being abstracted at: Pakistan Scientific Research Information Center (PASTIC), Islamabad; National Transportation Research Board, USA; American Concrete Institute, USA; HRIS, USA; NTIS, USA; National Library of Congress, USA; and INSPEC, UK amongst many others catalogues.

The research journal is already registered under ISSN 0254-7821 as of November 1996 and is indexed for engineering index, published by Engineering Information Inc., USA.

Graduate studies

The postgraduate courses were started in the University in 1978 leading to M.E. Degree, initially, in three branches. At present, these course are taught during evening time [summer 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm,winter 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm,Ramdhan timings 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm (according to PST)]. Library

The Central Library of the University contains more than 80,000 books related to engineering, technology and science. Many journals on various subjects related to engineering and technology are currently being subscribed from Pakistan, U.S.A, U.K and many other countries, Library has subscription to Sciences & Technology database of over 400 Journals many articles on database are available in full text image format.

There are more than 15,000 (approx) text books in the Book Bank, which are loaned to the students for one term on nominal rent. The collection of books is updated continuously and new books are acquired on the recommendations of experienced faculty members which makes collection most suited and beneficial to graduate and under-graduate students. In addition, latest reference and other books are also required every year to keep the users of the library abreast with the latest information on Science & Technology specially Engineering and its allied subjects.

In addition to providing the readers with in-house collection, services are also provided for inter-library loan and photocopying of literature including technical articles from other national and international libraries. Literature search services are also provided on request in cooperation with technical information centers within and outside Pakistan. This service is further enhanced by cooperation among Muslim Countries under COMSTECH.

A CD-ROM database has been subscribed by the Library, which is updated every month. About 400 journals concerning various aspects of Applied Science & Technology are abstracted on this database and most of the articles are available in full image form. A CD-ROM library is also being developed for the use of students and faculty members. Students and faculty members are also provided with Internet facility. Some on-line searching can also be arranged. Students are encouraged to use computer for their project work for which PCs are installed in the Internet section of the library.

The Catalog of books is computerized and subject bibliographies can be produced on request. The library is heavily used by the students, faculty members and researchers and is open from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm. throughout the year with professional staff available at service points to meet needs of the readers. Besides the Central Library, individual departments have established their own seminar libraries, which cater to the specific needs of the departments. A union catalogue of books available on Campus is also functional. Library is connected to some departments through Local Area Network (LAN) which can be used from their own departments. Such services will be access able to all departments on Campus when fiber optics cable is laid.
