Michael Sandberg, Baron Sandberg
(Lord) Michael Sandberg (born 1927) was born in Surrey and educated at St. Edward’s School, Oxford. In 1945, he joined the army and did his pre-officer’s training in Kent. He volunteered to join the Indian Army and was posted to the North West Frontier with the Sixth Lancers. Upon Indian Independence, he joined the First King’s Dragoon Guards, and went to serve in Palestine and North Africa.
In 1949 Michael returned to the East and joined the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. In 1977 he became Chairman and Chief Executive of the HSBC Group. He was awarded a CBE in 1982 and knighted on his retirement from the Bank in 1987. Since retiring, he has remained active on the boards of several companies in Hong Kong, North America and Australia.
In 1997 Lord Sandberg embarked on a second career when he entered the House of Lords as a peer. He now lives in Hampshire.
