"Bye Bye" is a song written by American singer Mariah Carey, Johnta Austin and Stargate for Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC², and is the second single from the album.[1][2][3] The single was produced by Carey and Stargate.
Song information
MTV stated that although the song appears to be about her deceased father, Carey "extends this song about death to be for anybody 'who just lost somebody'they truly care about and those who lost someone they hate, you still end up either feeling gulity or missing them".[4] Carey believed that by making "Bye Bye" more open, "everybody could kind of be healed by the song and have their own experience listening to it."[5]
The song premiered on radio April 7 2008 and has been played on various radio stations in the United States, according to Mediabase.[6] The single became available to download at iTunes on April 14 2008.[1]
Carey first performed "Bye Bye" on T4 4Music and performed it again live on April 14 2008, the single's digital release date, on The Oprah Winfrey Show and then again, two days later, on the result show of American Idol season 7 on April 16.[1] Carey performed the song on Good Morning America on April 25, 2008.
The single officially went for adds on April 22 2008 on Mainstream and Rhythm/Crossover stations.[7].
Critical reception
In its review of the song, VH1 said that the song appears to be too basic for an artist like Carey...It was that it was like "insurance — in case nothing else is a hit, here's a sure-shot".[8] Elsewhere, the song has received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics. For instance, Rap-Up.com stated that "Bye Bye" is "a song everyone can relate to [and] it will get some listeners teary-eyed."; it also stated that the single would "probably be Mariah's 19th #1".[9] Similarly, Bill Lamb from About.com stated that although "[n]othing is ever a sure bet to be a #1 hit, ["Bye Bye"] is about as close as it gets"; he also stated that the song has "universal appeal".[10] Bob Burke from FMQB.com stated that the single was "another gem with multi-format hit potential" and that the single was "destined to be her nineteenth #1 hit."[11] The magazine Blues and Soul gave the single a rating of 8/10, stating that it was "[a]n absolutely stunning track, sung in an absolutely stunning manor by an absolutely stunning diva".[12] Chuck Taylor from Billboard reviewed the song and said: "A tinkly piano-driven groove escorts the lyrical embrace, with oozy synths, a flush of R&B via male shout-outs of "Eh!" and a vocal that builds to a fitting tour-de-force crescendo, though pushed down in the mix to maintain decorum. "Bye" seems poised to have Carey greet the top of the pops for a 19th time".[13]
Chart performance
"Bye Bye" debuted at #23 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the "Hot Shot Debut", selling 60,000 downloads,[14] following her performance of the song on American Idol and Oprah. Although it slid to positions #32 and #38 in following weeks, the song has slowly climbed into the top 20, peaking at #19.[15]
Music video
The director of the video is Justin Francis. The video consists of multiple scenes with Carey and her husband Nick Cannon, along with various behind-the-scenes footage of Carey at various promotional events. The video then closes with pictures of various deceased people, including David Cole, Luciano Pavarotti, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Luther Vandross, all with whom Carey had collaborated with during her career.
After canceling scheduled appearances on TRL and BET's 106 and Park several times in order to premiere the "Bye Bye" music video, it finally premiered on Comcast.net at midnight on May 5 2008.[16]
