Cartoon pornography is the portrayal of illustrated or animated fictional characters in erotic or sexual situations. This includes but is not limited to parody renditions of famous cartoons and comics.

Cartoon parodies

Some artists use parodies of pre-existing cartoon or comics characters, drawing for example Walt Disney's famous princesses, television characters, or comic book characters in various states of undress and possibly engaged in sexual activity.

Other favorite sources of pornographic cartoon parodies include Warner Brothers cartoon characters such as Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd, and Pepe LePew; Disney cartoon characters; newspaper comic strip characters such as Dennis the Menace, the Family Circus, and Luann; and such television or movie characters The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Sailor Moon, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Futurama, Danny Phantom, Totally Spies, Teen Titans, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Ben 10 and South Park.

As the fictional characters in many of these series are under 18, and minors in most countries, some countries consider cartoon pornography of these characters to be child pornography. This is currently the case in Canada, where a man in Alberta was convicted of possession of japanese cartoon pornography. While spared jailtime, the sentence incurred being placed on a sex offender registry, and following his conviction a jail sentence was made mandatory in the conviction of all future cases in Canada.

Other artists, such as Jab, use their own characters and create erotic comics.

Non-parody artists

Artists who draw pre-existing characters do not generally have any special notability among the cartoon pornography community, in contrast, some of the artists who draw their own characters, such as Alazar, Bill Ward, Kevin J. Taylor, or John Willie, have gained a cult fan base.

The animation duo Sven & Angus (Rum Runners, creators of Brickhouse Betty), have gained such a huge fan base that they have even won an AVN Award, the "Oscars" of the adult entertainment industry. These cartoons are often found on entertainment sites aimed at mature audiences.

The legal status of pornography varies from country to country. In addition to the normal legal status of pornography, much cartoon pornography depicts potentially minor characters engaging in sexual acts. One of the primary reasons for this may be due many cartoons being at least partially aimed young adults or even children, and therefore the characters themselves are not mature adults. Cartoon pornography does not always have depictions of minors in sexual acts or situations, but that which does may fall under the jurisdiction laws concerning child pornography.

The United States

In the United States, cartoon porn that does not contain parodies or depictions of minors generally falls under the category of the First Amendment, and is therefore protected by law. For more information on general legality of pornography, see Pornography in the United States.
