North Enfield Cricket Club
North Enfield Cricket Club has been in existence for nearly 125 years, and celebrated the 50th anniversary of playing at Strayfield Road Ground in Clay Hill, Enfield. The land on which the ground is located was formerly part of Hilly Fields Park, owned by Enfield Council. In 1951/52, the Council agreed to lease the land to the Club with the conditions that the Club own and maintain both the cricket square and the pavilion and car park. A public right of way exists across the middle of the playing area.
The Club has had varied participation in league cricket over the years, beginning with the Middlesex League and progressing to the Hertfordshire League in which the Club fields three teams - in Divisions 4, 9 and 13 respectively for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XIs. The Club also fields a team in the Chess Valley Sunday League.
Prominent professional cricketers that have associations with North Enfield are Mike Smith of Middlesex who staged a benefit game at North Enfield in 1976 and John Emburey, the England spin bowler, holding a similar fixture in 1983.
The Club is well-known on the cricket circuit for the location of the infamous oak tree, which grows approx 50 yards from the edge of the square and 10 yards from the boundary on the north-eastern side of the ground.
The Club celebrated the promotion of the 1st XI to Division 3 of the Herts League in 2007, with the 2nd XI finishing in midtable and the 3rd XI narrowly missing out on promotion from Division 13.
