A vibrating sample magnetometer is a scientific instrument that measures magnetic properties. By moving the sample to and fro, a periodically changing magnetic field is created, which is sensed by a set of pick-up coils. The induced voltage is proportional to the sample's magnetisation. By measuring in the field of an external electromagnet, it is possible to obtain the hysteresis curve of a material.
