Glenbard South High School, or GSHS is a public four-year high school located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. It is part of Glenbard Township High School District 87. The smallest of the 4 Glenbard Township High Schools, South draws it's students from southern Glen Ellyn (primarily south of IL Rt 38), and portions of unincorporated Glen Ellyn, and a small portion of Lombard.

History

Glenbard South was the fourth of the Glenbard high schools built. It opened in 1972. The capacity of the building is 1500, but with additions, could actually house 2500 students. There used to be no windows, except in the library, the art rooms, and some hallways, but there are now windows in the towers as well. Because of this fact, it is rumored that Glenbard South was previously a jail but the school states that the lack of windows was for energy conservation.

Press

Glenbard South's school newspaper appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for misspelling the slogan, "If you can't beat them, then they are not tied down properly. If you still can't beat them, then accept that they better than you." Leno laughed at this.[citation needed]

Jay Leno also featured the school on his "Headlines" segment where Glenbard South had a display that read "Glenbard South: 25 years of excellance".[citation needed]

Academics

In 2005, Glenbard South had an average composite ACT score of 24.0, and graduated 96.3% of its senior class. Glenbard South has made Adequate Yearly Progress on the Prairie State Achievements Examination, a state test part of the No Child Left Behind Act.[1]

The staff is comprised of 100 teachers, of which 94% hold an advanced degree.[2] The average class size is 23.3.

Mission Statement

"To prepare students to be productive citizens equipped to challenge the future as a knowledgeable person, critical thinker, effective communicator, quality producer, collaborative worker, responsible individual, and socially responsible citizen."[3]

Glenbard South competes in the Western Sun Conference. Its mascot is the Raider. In 2001, Glenbard South won the Illinois state championship for Boys Cross Country. [4]
