Joey Jordison

Nathan Jonas Jordison (born April 26, 1975), also known simply as Joey, or by his stage name #1, is an American musician known as the drummer of Slipknot, and one of the two guitarists of the Murderdolls. He is one of three members to remain with Slipknot since its founding, along with bassist Paul Gray and percussionist Shawn Crahan. He is considered by many to be highly skilled at playing drums, due mostly to the speed at which he plays.

Personal life and career

Jordison was born in Des Moines, Iowa, at the Mercy Hospital. From a very young age, he was interested in rock music, and growing up, listened to metal bands such as Slayer, Kiss and Metallica. His first instrument was the guitar, before taking up the drums. He was greatly inspired by Kiss and Metallica's drummers, Eric Carr and Lars Ulrich, respectively, and while attending Waukee High School in Waukee, Iowa, Jordison played drums in the drumline, as well as in a jazz band.

Jordison previously worked at a Sinclair gas station in Des Moines, Iowa and as well played in various local extreme metal bands from around in the vicinity of Des Moines, including Modifidious and Anal Blast.

Outside Slipknot, Jordison has filled in as drummer for American Head Charge, Satyricon, Metallica, Ministry, Korn and 3 Inches of Blood. He also produced the Roadrunner United project, and performed drums on "Annihilation by the Hands of God", "Constitution Down", "Enemy of the State", and both bass and drums on "Tired 'N Lonely", "No Way Out", "Army of the Sun" from the project's album The All-Star Sessions.

He also performed with the Murderdolls, recording guitar, drums, and bass for the band's first studio album, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls. The band became especially popular in the United Kingdom and Japan, before playing their last show on January 17, 2004 in Corona, California. After this they went on an indefinite hiatus with Jordison returning to Slipknot. Since this hiatus begun, both vocalist Wednesday 13 and Jordison have maintained that the band have not split up for good, and that they would return to record a second album together in the future.

Ventures outside Slipknot

In the summer of 2004 at Download Festival, headlining band Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich was unable to make the performance, and as a result Jordison filled in as temporary drummer for the band, performing for most of the set. In December of 2004, Jordison filled in for Satyricon drummer Frost during the band's American tour, after Frost was unable to enter the country. He also drummed for Ministry on their tour promoting the Rio Grande Blood album. On April 19, 2007, it was announced that Jordison would be touring with Korn for nearly five months while then-drummer David Silveria was on hiatus from the band.[1]

Jordison accompanied Korn on drums during the Download Festival 2007. This record-breaking performance was Jordison's fifth appearance at the festival since its inception in 2003, and marks him as the only artist to play the festival multiple times in four different high-profile bands. Past Download performances include Murderdolls (main stage in 2003), Slipknot (main stage in 2004 and 2005), a guest appearance with Metallica (main stage in 2004) and finally, Korn (Dimebag Darrell stage in 2007).

Jordison has also ventured into record production, and has so far produced albums including Slipknot's 9.0 Live, 3 Inches of Blood's Fire Up the Blades, and joint-produced Roadrunner United's The All-Star Sessions.

Masks

Jordison uses a Kabuki-style mask, which reflects a personal experience. During his youth, Jordison came home late one Halloween night to find his mother wearing a similar mask, meaning to frighten him. He was reportedly terrified of the emotionless stare of the mask. During the recording of Slipknot's first album, Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat., he wore a plain white version. For the band's self-titled album, he decorated it with stripes and dribbles of paint. For Iowa, he painted fake blood all over his mask, and for the Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) era, he included a variation of designs in the mask, notably the unique claw slashes. His most recent mask, shown during his appearance at the Fuse Fangoria Award show, is gray with red and black markings. Jordison has expanded on the mask, saying, "The design enables it to feel however you want it to feel; scary, evil or perverted. All those things held in one mask." Jordison owns more variations of the mask than any other member of the band, changing its look much more frequently."
