"7 Things"
Song

"7 Things" is the first single from American pop singer Miley Cyrus' upcoming studio album Breakout. The song was released in May 2008.[1]

Background

"7 Things" was written by Cyrus, Antonina Armato, and Tim James, all of whom co-wrote Cyrus's hit single "See You Again" and a number of songs from Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus. Cyrus described the song as "therapy" for her, saying "[it goes] through all the different stages of what's been going on the past couple years."[2] She said the song's lyrics are "Miley going through, like, 900 emotions while I'm trying to write a song."[3] In the song, Cyrus "describes the pain of a recent breakup" by listing seven things that she hates about her ex-boyfriend.[1] She accuses the subject of having feelings for another girl, shown in the line "You love me, you like her". At the end, she alternatively lists seven things she likes about him. Miley joked in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, "I want them to be upset. That was my point".[2]

Promotion and release

"7 Things" debuted on Radio Disney on May 12, 2008, and on Elvis Duran and the Morning Zoo a day later.[1] The song became one of the most added songs to contemporary hit radio stations the following week, and even received rotation on adult contemporary radio stations.[4] Cyrus performed the song at the Zootopia concert in East Rutherford, New Jersey on May 17, 2008.[5] The song was released via the iTunes Store on June 17, 2008.[6] The music video premiered on ABC on June 28 2008.

Reception

Billboard called "7 Things" "a worthy chart contender" and described it as "an odd composite, sounding decidedly country between its youth-driven headbanger choruses."[7] The song "combines Avril Lavigne-style angst with dad Billy Ray Cyrus' country twang", according to People.com.[1] The Village Voice also made note of the Avril comparisons. The review states that Miley "guns for full-on vintage-Avril territory," but felt that the song was "boring."[8] According to one review, "7 Things" "mix[es] jangly pop verses with a raucous rock chorus, resulting in a weird but entertaining hybrid of Natalie Imbruglia's 'Torn' and No Doubt's 'Just a Girl'."[5] Headline Planet described the song as a youthful "breath of fresh air." The reviewer added, "It is not strong enough to distance her from the female pop pack, but it is good enough to prove that she belongs."[9] The Los Angeles Times said that Cyrus "tries maybe a bit too hard to please all constituents, going from cheesy acoustic strummer to full-on mall punk" but called it a "catchy-enough song".[10]

Music video

The music video was shot in Los Angeles the weekend of the week beginning May 30, 2008 with director Brett Ratner.[11] Promotional pictures for the video were leaked on June 2, 2008.[12] The music video premiered on ABC on June 28, 2008, and appeared on Disney Channel the same day.[13]The video was featured on Disney.com frontpage on July 7th.

The music video features Miley Cyrus singing with band about the 7 things the she hates about her ex- boyfriend. Scenes of sad, angry and heartbroken girls are also shown singing a long with Miley. Later on one by one they join Miley in front of the band while singing and dancing about the 7 things that they like and hate about their ex-boyfriends. The music video concludes with Miley and the heartbroken girls feeling relieved and happy.

During the video, the girls are holding objects, most likely given to them by their ex-boyfriends.

Controversy

The video has sparked alot of controversy because of the dog tag Miley has on. Many Jonas Brothers' fans, aswell as Miley fans are confused about the dog tag because of it significance to Nick Jonas. Also in the video Miley holds up a picture of her and her Ex with a post it over his face covering up the identity. This infuriated fans on both camps and is still a mystery of who the mystery man is.

"7 Things" first entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 84.[14] Two weeks later, "7 Things" rose sixty spots from number 70 to round out the top ten.[15] In its first week of wide digital release, "7 Things" moved over forty places to number four on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs, selling 130,000 copies.[16]
