Cuban British or British Cubans (Template:Lang-es) are ethnic Cubans who have been born in and/or raised in the United Kingdom (full and partial descent). The term also includes people who were born in Cuba and have migrated to the UK. According to the 2001 Census, there were 1,083 Cuban-born people living in the UK.[2]

Summary

The Cuban British community emmerged in the 1960s and 1970s, when refugees from the Castro regime chose the UK as an alternative to the USA.[citation needed] Like most other Latin American communities in the country, Cubans tend to settle in the larger towns and cities over the rural countryside.[citation needed] The majority of Cubans in the UK are of Spanish, Jewish and mixed ethnicites.[citation needed] The number of Cubans in the UK is fairly small, but they are Europe's second largest only after the Cuban population in Spain[citation needed] and like many emerging ethnic groups in the country, the Cuban community is rapidly increasing in size.[citation needed]

Culture and Influence

The main contribution of Cubans in the UK has been through the introduction of bars and restaurants specialising in Cuban cuisine as well as the ever-growing popularity of Salsa Music via various bars and clubs.[citation needed] As far as events go, the Carnival de Cuba is one the largest free festivals celebrating Cuban Culture in Europe, held in London's Southwark Park and featuring live salsa bands, dance, food, drink, and kid's events.[citation needed] The event is normally held around June. The event regularly has attendances in excess of 50,000 people and attracts top Salsa bands from around the world.[citation needed]
