Rennesøy is a municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway.
The parish of Rennesø was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Mosterøy was separated from Rennesøy July 1, 1884 - it was, however, again merged with Rennesøy January 1, 1965 (but without Kvitsøy).
The name
The Norse form of the name was Rennisøy. The meaning of the first element is unknown, the last element is øy f 'island'.
Until 1918 the name was written "Rennesø".
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1981). The two croziers represent the old abbey of Utstein.
