Victoria Park Train Station is a Transperth train station 6km from Perth Train Station, on the Armadale / Thornlie Line, in Western Australia. A new Victoria Park station located 230 metres south of the existing site will commence operations on 27 August 2008, after which the old station will be demolished.[1][2]
History
Redevelopment
In December 1994, the Metropolitan Region Scheme was amended to include the original route for the Mandurah Railway, via Kenwick.[citation needed] In July 1995, the Court Liberal government announced the new line to Mandurah (via Kenwick) and committed to complete the line from Kenwick to Jandakot by 2005.[citation needed] In April 1997, the same government approved funding for the South West Metropolitan Railway Master Plan. The Master Plan was completed in April 2000.[citation needed]
In August 2002 the recently elected Gallop Labor government decided to change the railway alignment, and announced the rail line for the southern suburbs railway would instead run along the Kwinana Freeway instead of Armadale Suburban line as previously planned.[citation needed] The Thornlie spur line would however be retained, and may provide a future link option between the two rail alignments.[citation needed]
As part of improvements to the Armadale line, the rail alignment was upgraded including the introduction of grade separated rail crossings.[citation needed] The nearby Lathlain Station was also demolished, in preparation for the construction of a new Victoria Park station nearby.[3] After some delay,[3] on 17 July 2007 Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced that a $9.2m AUD (2007) contract for the construction of the new station had been awarded.[1]
As with the previous station, the platforms are in an island configuration. Unlike the previous station, the platforms may be accessed via covered walkway, accessible ramps and lifts, of particular importance to due to the station's location adjacent to the Association for the Blind.[1]
