Fredward "Freddie" Benson is a fictional character from the popular television series, iCarly. He is played by Nathan Kress. Freddie has a crush on Carly and frequently asks to date her.
Character Information
Freddie is the producer of the webshow with Carly and Sam. In the first episode,[1] Freddie videoed his two friends Carly and Sam making fun of their teacher, Ms. Briggs (Mindy Sterling).
He also has a great-great grandfather who ran a circus group called the "Fencin' Bensons" and became obsessed with it. He forced his son to learn, his son's son was forced to learn, and Freddie's mom was forced to learn, and in the episode "iFence" was shown to be an excellent fencer. She was afraid that Freddie would end up like his great-great grandfather, so she didn't let him fence until Carly and Freddie talked her into it.
Freddie's Mother
Freddie's mother, Ms. Benson (Mary Scheer) is extremely rude, exceedingly overprotective, embarrassing, and nosey. She often embarrasses Freddie in front of Carly and Sam and occasionally in front of his schoolmates. Freddie loves his mother, but he thinks she is trying too hard to be a good mom.
Examples of Ms. Benson's overprotectiveness and embarrassment:
- Makes Freddie sleep on the floor so there is no chance he'll fall off of his bed [2]
- Frequently gives Freddie tick baths. (She claims that they hide in leg hair, even though he has none.)
- Scolds him about his posture and even has a rule about it: "You won't get respect if your back's not erect." Sam finds this rule funny and spits her drink in Freddie's face and laughs.
- Signs herself and Freddie up for mother-son synchronized swimming lessons.
- Prohibits him from eating fruit because she's afraid of Freddie being allergic to fruit.
- Makes him sign a paper after he showers saying that he shampooed twice.
- Won't let Freddie use a fork because she is afraid that he'll stab his tongue.
- In one episode, it was mentioned that she freaked out when Freddie spilled a drop of mustard on his church pants.
- She also searched everywhere for cloud block when Freddie claimed he was afraid of getting a 'cloud burn'.
- She only gives Freddie an $8 allowance because she's afraid he'll "buy a bus ticket and leave her".
Personal life
Freddie is the technical producer of iCarly. In the pilot episode, [3], Freddie agrees to record the talent auditions that Carly and Sam were forced to hold, but he accidentally recorded the girls making fun of Miss Briggs' "crazy, pointy boobs". Freddie was jealous of Carly's crush, Jake Krandle (Austin Butler), who was performing on iCarly, but Freddie is delighted when he discovers Jake is a terrible singer. Freddie fixes his voice so Carly kisses Freddie on the nose for fixing everything.[4]
Freddie once helped Carly and Sam search for 6 baby chicks, before it was too late. Carly and Sam found the last chick in their elevator behind the window. Freddie pushed the bottom button on the elevator, and although Carly and Sam hurried to get the last chick, the chick from the window was gone. Freddie made himself guilty, until time was up. Spencer, who was stuck in the heating duct the entire time, coughed up the last chick after the kids pulled him out.[5] Once, Carly and Sam had an argument because Carly gave Sam a one-of-a-kind iCarly T-shirt, which Sam traded for tickets for a Cuddlefish concert, which Carly really wanted to go to.
In an online poll, Freddie revealed that most voters picked "Carly and Sam are both acting dumb and they should just make up and be friends again."[6] Freddie and Sam made a bet once over the meaning of the acronym MPEG. Freddie thought it was "Megapixel Electronic Gallery", but Sam knew it was actually "Moving Picture Experts Group". They bet that the loser would get a tattoo of the winner's face. Of course, Freddie lost and got a tattoo of Sam's face, much to Freddie's mom's disgust.[7]
Freddie once helped Sam, by not letting Carly leave, because she was their best friend, after ruining Carly's interview.[8]
Freddie and Sam often make rude comments about each other, although they are genuinely friends.
Freddie's Relationships
Carly Shay
Carly's appartment is accross the hall from Freddie's. It is never explained how they met, but it could possibly be the fact that they are neighbors. Freddie has a crush on Carly which is expressed in many episodes when Carly obviously likes an other guy and Freddie gets jealous. Freddie is also the techinical producer on iCarly, in which Carly and Sam star. Carly is friends with both freddie and Sam, so sometimes there are problems with who to side with and both sides getting mad.
Sam Puckett
Sam is Freddies frienemy. Even though Sam likes to make fun of Freddie, they can work together well as evedent in "iMight Switch Schools." An example of Sam and freddie working together in the episode "iMight Switch Schools" is when Carly is actually considering going to Briarwood prep. Freddie and Sam try to sabotage Carly's interview. Sam and freddie almost never agree, and they are always caught fighting. In one episode, Carly actually resorts to spraying them with a bottle. Sam and Freddie are also always making bets. Like in the episode "iFence" freddie bets that Sam can't finish her book due to the fact that she never reads or does anything academic. It seems that they are only friends because of Carly being thier common friend. This is evident because they are always fighting and exact opposites, who would probably never become friends.
Spencer Shay
Spencer is Carly's older brother, which is what his relationship with Freddie is. But in a couple episodes this goes deeper. LIke in "iWill Date Freddie" Spencer gives Freddie some advice before his first date, and in the episode "iFence" Spencer gets freddie into fencing with him, even though this is not needed because Freddie comes from a long line of fencers.
Other relationships
- Miss. Benson: Freddie's mother, afraid everything is dangerous for Freddie.
- Miss. Briggs: a teacher from school. From episode "iSpy on a Mean Teacher", Carly, Freddie and Sam sneak into Miss. Briggs' house. Carly and Freddie get trapped in the closet. On iCarly, Freddie makes Miss. Briggs' bagpipe performance funny, getting the audience laughing because of the changing and interesting backgrounds.
- Principal Ted Franklin: Freddie, Carly and Sam's princpal. In the episode "iGot Detention", Sam gets detention, putting the 50th webshow off iCarly in jeopardy. Carly gets detention on purpose, and sneaks Freddie into the classroom, so they can do the show.
- Valerie: Freddie's ex-girlfriend, but Carly and Sam's enemy. Tries to get Freddie to quit iCarly and do a webshow with her instead.
- Gibby: Freddie's friend and student from his, Carly and Sam's school. He gets invited to Mini Golf at Carly's appartment in the episode "iMight Switch Schools".
- Jonah: Freddie's friend from Science Class. Later, Sam's ex-boyfriend due to trying to kiss Carly.
- Nevel Patterman: Freddie, Carly, and Sam's 11-year-old enemy.
- Miss. Benson: Freddie's mother who appears in some of the episodes. She overprotects Freddie quite often.
- Jake Krandle: Student from school. Freddie fixes his singing voice during iCarly in the episode "iLike Jake".
- Mandy Valdes: iCarly.com's biggest fan in the episode "iAm Your Biggest Fan".
- Mr. Howard: Teacher who gives Carly and Sam detention, including Freddie.
