Paulo Jorge full name Paulo Jorge Vieira Alves is a Portuguese footballer born on May 5, 1981 at Portugal who currently plays for Málaga CF on a loan from SL Benfica.
Meteoric ascension
After a few seasons with second-division FC Maia (including a loan spell with third-division Infesta), Paulo Jorge ended up making a move to Porto side Boavista FC after 2003/04 and 2004/05, both seasons in which Paulo noticeably played above average football. After a fantastic 2005/06 spell at the "axadrezados", where he became a key figure leading the right flank, having scored 6 goals, clubs like Valencia CF and PSV Eindhoven envied Paulo Jorge's services, but after turning down an offer from champions FC Porto he joined SL Benfica. In his first game with the Lisbon side he scored the Eagles' only goal against AEK Athens FC of Greece in a pre-season 3-1 defeat, after which he started in UEFA Champions League matches against FK Austria Wien and FC København. After having played few matches for Benfica, Paulo Jorge was loaned to the Spanish side Málaga CF.In july he signed for portuguese team CS Marítimo from Benfica on a free transfer.
National team
Paulo has been fully capped for all of Portugal's national squads, save for senior. The Portugal A-team is well served with flankers such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Quaresma, Simão Sabrosa and Nani, so his near-future chances of earning a starting place look dim but has already been called up for a friendly by Luiz Felipe Scolari, despite not having played.
Facts
Paulo weighs in at about 76 Kg and is about 176 cm tall. He prefers playing at right-winger/right-midfield, where he was very successful with Boavista FC, although he is also able to play at left-wing.
