New Admin Thank You's
Just a quick "thank you" for voting me for admin. Now all I've got to do is find out how to use these worrying new powers... Grutness|hello? 06:19, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Hi BlankVerse,
I would like to thank you for your vote of support and confidence for my adminship, it has been much appreciated. If you need anything in future that requires my attention, please do not hesitate to contact me. :)

Let me add my thanks for your support in my nomination as well. I look forward to helping out. - BanyanTree 04:12, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for supporting me on my RfA. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I hope I can put my new abilities to some good use. -- grm_wnr Esc 17:39, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Hi BlankVerse. Thank you for supporting my recent RfA. I was surprised and humbled by the number of positives votes. I'll be monitoring RfA regularly from now on and will look for a chance to "pay it forward". In light of your comments, I'll also try to play an active role in trying to help SchmuckyTheCat, Huaiwei and Instantnood resolve their differences. Cheers, --MarkSweep 02:32, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for supporting my RFA. It couldn't have happened without your effort. FeloniousMonk 18:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
Did you know?
Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article grunion, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently-created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page. |

SoCal WikiProject
I've made a list of the children of Category:California
Just to let you know, I've created a list of the child categories of Category:California, at: Wikipedia:WikiProject California/categories. Let me know what you think of it. JesseW 00:29, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
WikiProject California
I've been editing articles on California for a long time already, but it is noly recently that I've actually put myself into the list. Some active editors who have not signed up but are doing a lot of work on California articles are:
- User:Moncrief, User:Willmcw, User:Gentgeen, User:Elf, User:Dante Aligheri, User:J3ff, User:Coolcaesar, User:Jengod, and more....
I'll continue working on these articles, and I'll be sure to check out WikiProject So. California.

Interstate 710
I am not sure where to find very good info on some of the Interstate 710's history. Mostly I have been relying on either some of CalTrans documents or http://www.cahighways.org. However, I know that:
- Exit #1 is designated as Anaheim Street, thus I assume that this is currently the highway's official southern terminus. [1]
- 710 is a "Non-chargable" Interstate route [2]. It never got federal funding, but is signed as an Interstate to provide continuity and connectivity. Most of 710 is signed as an Interstate because it already passes Interstate standards.
- But the portion from Hwy 1 South to Ocean Blvd is a type B "Non-chargable" Interstate. That segment technically cannot be signed as an Interstate until its upgraded to Interstate standards.
You can probably find a bit more information at http://www.cahighways.org/505-805.html#710 (Which reminds me, I have to check if the Interstate highway article does mention "chargable" v. "non-chargable" routes). Zzyzx11 (Talk) 10:54, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
Boston Accent Babel User Box
I ultimately wanted to add it as a new legitimate addition to Babel, since there actually is an article on this (see:Boston accent), but I may have missed some policy somewhere or something. I'm also having problems with the category part. Oh well, que sera. I've tried getting advice all over the place, but there hasn't been much so far other than from longhair. Karmafist 22:26, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- That's fair enough. I'll make it into a subsitute on a user subpage, and let anyone who wants to use it do so. Karmafist 23:27, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ok, copy and pasted the code onto my userpage, and took out the template stuff. Feel free to delete the old page at will. Just broke 1200 edits today, and it feels good. Karmafist 14:53, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Head out on the Highway
Just wanted to acknowledge your message. I'd already posted at County Routes, but thanks for the heads up. There seems to be an Emotional Investment in the old caps issue on the part of some that I'm not quite getting. Not sure where the Smug Tone comes in either, but hey. Cheers. LA Wiki
Thanks for the link. I found that site late yesterday. While it may have some promise it doesn't seem to be up to date. I suppose that would be cause for me to join it. Theshibboleth 08:41, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
User page, et al
I have noticed that you have run into Ronald20 (talk · contribs) as well, intresting to say the least. I also like the statement on your user page, and i would have so say that i support and agree with the comments that you have on it. By the way i was wondering if you might want to take a look at some stuff thats kinda in the Copyright problems area with a user that i have encountered. I dont want to jump into specifics right away, i am just looking for an outside view on what should happen next. If you dont want to get involved thats ok. Also if you looking for a discussion on wikipedia problems, i would gladly share my views with a pearson that same to share the same ideas of me on the surrface. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 05:42, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah Dittoboy, thats a name i haven't seen kicked around in a long while. Yeah i'll look over your stuf see what you have come up with. I suspect their is more "disgruntaled" users out their then can be seen, but i kinda wonder if their almost to afraid to sepak up. But i'll get into it more later
I'll shoot you an email about this issue, justlet me know when you respond, as i dont check my email religilously. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 06:25, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
- Responded back. --Boothy443 | comhrÚ 08:03, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
Hi. Speaking of Ronald, I think I'll follow your advice and roll him back a bit. - Lucky 6.9 18:27, 21 August 2005 (UTC)
Vote bar
I am seeing a certain irony in your vote on this template. You complain about the elimination of discussion, yet it is not at all clear you read the part of the discussion where several people (myself included) are voting to keep this template in order to use it in the article namespace, such as this. Maybe you think that this is a bad idea as well, but I suspect your "strong delete" is basically a response to the VFD issue occupying the top of the discussion. Could you clarify in your vote whether you would find this template acceptable if limited to the article namespace? Dragons flight 07:15, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks
Hi BlankVerse! Thanks for the compliment on the Presidio article; I'll put it in the DYK queue (usually I forget). Compliments are rare here, and I really appreciate it.
Btw, couldn't agree more with the first comment on your user page: "...mourning the loss of civility and and the loss of too many good editors from the Wikipedia." It's true, and this has been bugging me for some time. There's ten times more complaining about bad behavior, and organized pillories and punishments, than rewards and kudos. Not sure what to do about it, but losing good editors to burnout is a bad thing. Peace and happy editing, Antandrus (talk) 14:48, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
LA Galaxy
I couldn't find your edits in the LA Galaxy history. Were you on another account? Anyway, IMHO the spelling of the names should be as they are on the official MLS roster for the team -- if diacritics are there, they should be here. As for the WikiProject, I'll fill in what I can. Thanks for alerting me to that. --Howcheng 16:11, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ha, I just assumed it was the Galaxy when you were talking about Chivas. Dryazan has a point -- the rosters don't have the accents, but he was open to having them after the pipe. After reading the discussion on the Talk page, my view is that the players' names should be spelled as close to how they write their own names as possible (for example, if Lopez was never López until he was on Chivas, then it should stay Lopez). How we determine that ... I don't know. Regards, Howcheng 15:41, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
GIS software
Interesting question! I don't know any free GIS software myself; since I work for a big company we use the commercial stuff (ESRI, AutoDesk, even a bit of MapInfo). I'm actually the department manager. Since there is a loose corporate policy discouraging open source software I haven't explored it (ESRI stuff is expensive: a basic ArcView 9.1 license at the lowest level is several thousand). Strictly as a GIS exercise, though, what you describe should be straightforward. If you want to show someone's movement through time, add a numerical attribute to the table of cities they inhabit (which would be points) -- the attribute would probably be years (1865, 1888, 1912, etc). Then use those points to build a polyline with the vertices ordered by what is in the attribute table; then give it a linetype of arrow. (As with all GIS problems there might be more than one solution too.)
A cheaper but not open-source option is to grab an ArcView 3.2 off of eBay; 3.2 is still quite useful and robust, and can be obtained fairly inexpensively (needs a patch to run in XP though). Hope this helps! Antandrus (talk) 15:29, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hi again! Almost all GIS programs allow you to link to an Excel file, though frankly I never use the .xls format: if I do data entry in Excel I always save down to a .dbf (DB4, DB3 or dBASE) first. You can't go wrong with .dbf for data attributes. ArcView uses .dbf for their shape file attributes. It sounds to me that attaching a genealogy database to a GIS is not all that trivial; there's a number of ways to set it up. Antandrus (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2005 (UTC)
Re: ir-3
I'm answering this on your talk page since I totally missed your comment on mine a few days ago... sorry. Well, it's like this: The Babel templates are always in the language they refer to, so an "irony" template has to be ironical itself - extremely ironical in the case of ir-3. Check out where the links lead to ;) -- grm_wnr Esc 15:34, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
Happy editing
Fixed now (took ~10 seconds with search/replace) Thanks for pointing that out. Do you think it's useful this way, so that people can watchlist userconduct separately? Radiant_>|< 09:42, August 27, 2005 (UTC)
nice job on Grunion
Excellent article! I hadn't noticed it until you added it to the SC Wikiproject. Been a long time since I've been on a grunion run (is that what you call them in the LA area?) It's a tidbit of southern Cal life no one else seems to know about. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 19:50, 28 August 2005 (UTC)
Just deserts?
Thanks for bring that to my attention. The term "low desert" also extends here to the Colorado Desert, so I don't think a merger would be particularly accurate. There's also more of the Colorado Desert here in California than there is Sonoran. The Antelope Valley and Mojave Desert northward are high desert, FWIW. I'll keep an eye on this. - Lucky 6.9 16:24, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- Appreciate you bringing this to editor's attention. I agree with Lucky, and Lucky must know better than I about "There's also more of the Colorado Desert here in California than there is Sonoran." AFAIK, The Colorado Desert is the distinctly California term for the Sonoran desert. . . i.e., the Sonoran Desert is the larger overall term, and the Colorado Desert is the subset name for this desert within California.
- The terms High Desert and Low Desert are syllable-saving terms referring to the Mojave Desert and Colorado Desert respectively (doncha love radio/TV news readers?). The names refer to relative elevation compared to sea level.
- Just so you know, the Antelope Valley, Victor Valley, Indian Wells Valley, Panamint Valley, and Death Valley all lie within the Mojave Desert. These are not all the regional names for areas within the Mojave Desert. . . but these are the most well known perhaps. On desert questions, Lucky and I are probably your best experts at present. Thanks again for inquiring with us first. That other desert dude, --avnative 13:27, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
- BV, your edits look just fine. Dunno why the article couldn't be merged, but I'm fine with it not being merged. The term Low Desert like its sister High Desert is really a syllable - saving term for the benefit of the radio/TV weatherfolk, IMO.
- BTW, I really like your "Statement in Black" you've made. I too mourn the loss of good editors due to incivility. Yours most kindly, --avnative 23:51, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
- Yeah, I understand what you're saying about Tuscon and "Low Desert." I've always wondered why Tusconians would use the term - my kneejerk guess is to distinguish themselves from the Phoenicians to their northwest. There may in fact be an elevation difference of note between the two localities - worth checking out some more. How I edit, BTW, is to refrain from putting into Wikipedia such "guesses" as this one without sourcing it out via a reliable source (and not everything on the Internet is always reliable, as you probably already know). But since you have a NWS source which I didn't know about, you're probably safe to include Tuscon into the article in the way you told me earlier. The only funny feeling I have regarding Tuscon in this regard is Phoenix, IMHO, isn't "High Desert." (But maybe the Mogollon Rim plays into this in ways I dunno as yet.) The REM reference doesn't surprise me, either. I now understand the rationale for having a Sonoran Desert article as well as a Low Desert article. Good work! --avnative 00:15, September 2, 2005 (UTC)
About rotating the photo of the New Otani...
Hello:
Rotating the photo is fine. I wish I had a higher quality original but unfortunately, my digital camera at the time was a real piece of junk (I have a better one now, as you may have noticed from my recent uploads). --Coolcaesar 17:31, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
Semiconscious' response
Hello! Thanks for the post: Science for Everyone Everywhere is moving along slowly since it's being run by grad students who are also TAs, running research projects, etc. I'm planning on devoting more time to it once the first week or so of class is over, as this is the busiest time of the year for a TA. I'll check out the two California wiki projects. Where are you in CA? Semiconscious (talk · home) 00:22, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
Arroyo article
I've saved it here and will look at it when I'm not consumed with school, etc. Thanks for the tip. --fpo 00:34, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, you say "Tony's crusade against deletion of school articles, now turned into a crusade against deletion of almost all articles, has so colored his views and actions that I did not trust his opinions at either VFD or VFU."
Although you were not among the many who endorsed my original response, I take your change of opinion seriously. Why do you think that my views have been colored? What am I doing that suggests to you that I'm on some kind of crusade against deletion of almost all articles? I just don't understand this but if we discuss it maybe I will. --Tony SidawayTalk 02:44, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
i know
i love riding my bike around LA... and driving in small doses. i hope to continue adding more pictures as i explore more corners of southern california. most of the best views of la are unfortunately not photo-appropriate, as they are seen from freeway overpasses or across the basin and valleys at night or in dark crowded subway stations. one time i actually got yelled at by several subway riders as i took those pictures of the red line stations. they were pretty scared.
SameerKhan 03:01, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
yah i don't think the city hall picture is representative either, but i unfortunately didn't get any nice pictures of the pier, beaches, main st, or marshes while i was there last weekend (i grew up in huntington beach and frequently visit friends there) enjoying a breakfast burrito at nick's deli. i have pictures of the bolsa chica end of the bay, but even those pictures didn't come out so well. seal beach is a gorgeous little town and it's unfortunate how few hb citizens really take note of that fact. i've been adding to a few articles on specific highways - i am appalled that there's really a discussion over what the names of the lists should be - hah!

Question
I'm a Spanish student of Japanese Literature. As there's no enough information in he Spanish wikipedia (we're working on it) I included a external link to a serious page of "The tale of Genji" in Spanish. I cannot copy the content of that page because it's not GNU but I thought it was good to help spanish readers. You erased it and I don't understand why. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.170.56.194 (talk • contribs)
Exactly. English is the internet language. We all use English wikipedia but it's interesting to have (al least) links to pages to our language sites. Thank you
