Last Train from Gun Hill is a 1959 Western by action director John Sturges. It stars Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, Carolyn Jones and Earl Holliman. Douglas and Holliman had previously appeared together in Sturges' Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which also used much of the same crew. The script is by James Poe, based on a story by Les Crutchfield. The film combines elements of 3:10 to Yuma and Sturges' Bad Day at Black Rock. Now, in public domain because of missing copyright indication.
Plot
The film concerns two old friends, Matt Morgan (Douglas) and Craig Belden (Quinn), who now find themselves on opposite sides of the law. Belden is a rich cattle baron and de facto ruler of the town of Gun Hill, while Morgan is a marshal living with his Native American wife (played by Ziva Rodann) and son.
When Morgan's wife is raped and murdered on the way home, he sets off to find the killer. His one clue is a saddle that he recognizes as belonging to Belden. Assuming it was stolen from his old friend, Morgan travels to Gun Hill to pick up the trail, but once there he quickly realizes that Belden's son Rick (Holliman) is the killer. Belden refuses to turn over his son, forcing Morgan to go against the entire town to first capture Rick and then get him on the last train from Gun Hill.
Belden sends men after Morgan to kill him and rescue his son, but Morgan manages to defeat them, and eventually forces Belden to stop sending men after him by threatening him with his son's life. Belden holds back his men, but still looks for opportunities to rescue his son. In the meantime, Belden's former lover has returned and is helping Morgan. She sneaks a shotgun up to his hotel room and warns him of the danger.
