The sixth season of Australian Idol will premiere on Sunday August 24 2008, on Network Ten with a 90 Minute Launch Episode, Followed by Five Nights worth of One Hour Audition Shows from Monday August 25 to Friday August 29.
Changes to Format
Kyle Sandilands, Ian Dickson, and Marcia Hines will return as judges, however long term judge Mark Holden will be leaving to pursue other interests[1]. Andrew G will be temporarily absent as he prepares for his wedding.[2]. The show will incorporate guest judges including Tina Arena and Darren Hayes of Savage Garden fame. Ricki Lee Coulter will act as back-stage host.
For the First Time in Australian Idol, The Top 24 Semi Finals will have a knockout process similar to American Idol in which 12 Males and 12 Females compete for Viewers Votes, 2 of each gender will be eliminated until top 12 is Built of 6 Males and 6 Females each.

- Brisbane, Queensland: Suncorp Piazza - April 24 and April 25
- Albany, Western Australia: Albany Town Hall - May 1
- Perth, Western Australia: Ascot Racecourse - May 4
- Melbourne, Victoria: Melbourne Park Function Centre - May 10 and May 11
- Adelaide, South Australia: Adelaide Entertainment Centre - May 18
- Sydney, New South Wales: Australian Technology Park - June 1 and June 2
Auditioning contestants were required to be between the ages 16 and 30 on July 1, 2008 (born between July 2, 1978 and July 2, 1992).
Registrations were also conducted online[3], although not mandatory, allowed users to enter a draw of $2,000.
Criticisms
Lack of industry support
It is unsure as to the future of Australian Idol, because two of its top sponsors (Telstra, and Procter & Gamble) have dropped, admit fears it it cannot rebound the decrease of 19% in ratings from last year, which has resulted in a decrease of $482 million off Ten's market value[4], consdering Channel Ten refused to air American Idol[5].
