- Women's football
- Norway beat defending champion United States 2–0 in group G.[1] Norwegian striker Leni Larsen Kaurin's second-minute goal was the fastest-ever goal in the women's Olympic football tournament.[2] Meanwhile, reigning World Cup champion Germany drew 0–0 with Brazil in group F.[3] Host China won its opening game by beating Sweden 2–1 in group E.[4]
Day -1: August 7
- Men's football
- Defending olympic and Under-20 World Cup champion Argentina beats Côte d'Ivoire 2–1 in group A,[5] while Italy wins 3–0 over Honduras in group D.[6]

- Starting at 8:00 PM CST (UTC+8),[7] the four hour long opening ceremony was attended by 91,000 spectators,[8] including U.S. President George W. Bush, Princess Anne, Princess Royal, Brazilian president Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi,Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Gordon Campbell, premier of British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada. The spectacle was directed by filmmaker Zhang Yimou, and the Olympic Cauldron was lit by gymnast Li Ning.[9]
Campbell's presence had some significance. Canada is the host country for the next Olympics: British Columbia is the host province, as Vancouver hosts the 2010 Winter Olympics.

- Swimmer Michael Phelps of the United States sets an Olympic record in the first round of the men's 400 m individual medley.[14]
- Swimmer Alexander Dale Oen of Norway sets an Olympic record in the first round of the men's 100 m breaststroke.[15]
- Chen Xiexia of China wins the women's 48 kg event in weightlifting, setting Olympic records in both the clean and jerk, and total weight lifted.[16]

- Argentina, Brazil and Italy qualify for the quarterfinals of the men's football tournament.[22]
- Guo Wenjun of China wins gold in women's 10 metre air pistol and sets a new Olympic record for final score with 492.3 points, after Natalia Paderina of Russia had bettered the Olympic qualification record to 391.[23]
- Michael Phelps wins the men's 400 metre individual medley final, with a new world record, winning his seventh Olympic title.[24]
- Park Tae-hwan wins the men's 400 metre freestyle final. He is the first South Korean swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal for swimming.[25]
- Swimmer Alexander Dale Oen of Norway set an Olympic record in the semifinals of the Men's 100 metre breaststroke, his second in the event.[26]
- Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice sets a new world record in women's 400 metre individual medley, winning Australia's 400th Summer Olympics medal. Second place Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe also finished below the previous world record.[27]
- The Netherlands team wins women's 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay final with a new Olympic record of 3:33.76.[28]
- American men's 4 x 100 metre freestyle relay breaks the World Record with a time of 3:12.23 in the preliminaries.[29]
- Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon of Thailand wins gold in women's 53 kg weightlifting and sets a new Olympic record for clean and jerk. This is Thailand's first medal in the 2008 games.[30]

- Kosuke Kitajima of Japan wins the Olympic gold medal in the men's 100 m breaststroke, and sets a world record of 58.91.[39]
- Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia sets a new Olympic record in the men's 100 m backstroke semifinal with a time of 53.06, only for the record to be set again in heat 2 of the semifinal by Hayden Stoeckel of Australia, with a time of 52.97.
- The United States team breaks the world record they had set in the semifinals by nearly four seconds, winning the gold medal in the men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:08:24 beating France by 0.08 seconds. At the start of the last leg, France's former 100m freestyle world record holder Alain Bernard was ahead by nearly a body length. But in the final seconds Jason Lezak was able to chase him down with a time of 46.06 the fastest relay leg in history. Five of the eight teams in the final finished under the previous world record, and a sixth team was only 0.03 seconds over the previous record.
