Sonipat (Punjabi: ਸੋਨੀਪਤ, سونیپت; Hindi: सोनीपत) Also spelled as Sonepat, is an ancient town and a municipal council in Sonipat District in the state of Haryana, India. It is believed that it was founded as Suvarnaprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata. Another legend ascribed it to Raja Soni, the thirteenth descendent of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers. [citation needed]

Geography

Sonipat is located at 28°59′N 77°01′E / 28.98°N 77.02°E / 28.98; 77.02.[1] It has an average elevation of 220 metres (721 feet)

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Sonipat had a population of 216,213. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Sonipat has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%. In Sonipat, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Sonepat Railway station

Yamuna River:The river flows besides the rural belt of the city with its holy waters which turn into a Black Nullah after entering the National Capital Delhi.

This acts as a natural boundary also between state of Haryana and the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Mughal Buildings: At the outskirts of the city one can enjoy the site of Mughal Buildings which lie unprotected.

Industry: In Sonipat there are a few companies which have been present for a long time now. Some of them have been mentioned below:

Atlas Cycle Factory: When the car company Maruti was less well known, more than 95% of India's vehicle-owning population owned a bicycle. It was at this time that Sonipat was the home of one of the biggest cycle manufacturer - Atlas cycle.

ECE: ECE has been here for quite some time and is situated near civil hospital.

Schools/Colleges

Sonepat is also known as the Education Capital of Haryana. Apart from Science and Technology university, there are a large number of renowned educational institutes in Sonepat.

Some of the schools and colleges are listed below:

Schools

S.M.Hindu School: Is one of the oldest schools in the country. Established in 1914 and added large number of minds to the civil society. It is located close to the Sonepat Railway Station.

Malviya Shiksha Sadan: The school near the railway line stands tall close to Gohana Road. The school was run by Bau Dwarka Nath Ji. Currently he is not in good health and has given operations of the school to Hindu group of academics.

Hindu Sr. Sec. School : Situated on New Court road,and its affiliated to C.B.S.E.

Shambhu dayal modern school:Situated on gohana road, established in 1975 and affiliated to C.B.S.E. It is also the oldest school in Sonipat afilliated to C.B.S.E.

State Engineering Colleges/University

Deen Bandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science & Technology is situated at the Sonepat-Murthal road is the only University in the field of Science & Technology in Haryana. Earlier, it was known as Chhotu Ram State College of Engineering. Also, it offers the degree programme in Architecture trade with renowned faculties.

Private Engineering Colleges

Apart from state engineering college in Murthal, there are more engineering colleges in Sonepat, making it one of the most sought after learning places in Haryana. These colleges are Hindu College of Engineering (HCE) and Bhagwan Mahaveer Institute of Engineering and Technology (BMIET).

Sonepat also has Industrial Training Institute (ITI), which impart vocational training to students in different fields of technology. In addition, Sonepat has Hindu Institute of Management (HIM), Government Polytechnic College, and a Pharmacy college.
