Valerie Anne Bertinelli (born April 23, 1960) is an American film and television actress best known for her role as Bonnie Franklin's daughter, Barbara Cooper, on the long-running television series One Day at a Time.
Early years
Bertinelli was born in Wilmington, Delaware[1] to American parents Nancy and Andy Bertinelli (a General Motors executive). She had an older brother, Mark, who died at 17 months from an accidental poisoning before Valerie was born. [2] Along with her other older and two younger brothers, the family lived in Claymont, Delaware and Clarkston, Michigan before moving to Van Nuys, California where Bertinelli studied acting at the Tami Lynn School of Artists. She attended Granada Hills High School until 1978 but did not graduate. As of January 2008, she is pursuing the last few credits needed for her high school diploma.[1] She was raised Catholic.[3]
Personal life
Before marriage, Bertinelli dated Steven Spielberg [4] and Scott Colomby.
Bertinelli married Eddie Van Halen on April 11, 1981. They had a son, Wolfgang "Wolfie" William Van Halen, on March 16 1991. On July 9 2002, they announced that they had been separated since October 2001. She filed for divorce on December 5 2005 which was finalized on December 20 2007.[5]
In a candid interview on February 25, 2008 with Oprah Winfrey, Bertinelli revealed that she and ex-husband Eddie both cheated. Valerie says, "I cheated. He claims to this day that I cheated first, but I don't know. I don't know about the timing." Bertinelli, who is promoting her new autobiography Losing It- And Gaining My Life Back One Pound At A Time, also speaks out about a lusty lesbian moment, when she kissed another woman.
Bertinelli has been with financial planner Tom Vitale since 2004.[6]
Bertinelli, who had slowly gained weight over the years, is the new spokesperson for the Jenny Craig weight-loss program. She lost a total of 40 lbs. as of January 2008 reaching her goal weight and can be seen in commercials along with Kirstie Alley and other Jenny Craig members. Bertinelli maintains a loyal fanbase, even though weight-loss commercials are widely acknowledged as one of the lower rungs of the entertainment industry and considered only slightly more demeaning than belly-dancing at Legion halls or demonstrating kitchen gadgets at Wal*Mart.
Bertinelli remains close to her former One Day at a Time co-star, Glenn Scarpelli.
