"Touch My Body"
Song

"Touch My Body" is a song co-written by American singer Mariah Carey, Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, Crystal "Cri$tyle" Johnson and Terius "The-Dream" Nash for Carey's eleventh studio album, E=MC². Produced by Carey, Stewart and Nash, it was released as the lead single off the album. The song is Carey's eighteenth number one single on the Billboard Hot 100.[1] and nominated for 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

Release and reception

The song was chosen as the lead single of the album during a vote with producer L.A. Reid and staff in Island Records.[2]Carey stated that the group "decided to just go with the fast-tempo and everybody kinda liked the song 'cause it's just fun and cute and sexy and sweet".[citation needed]

The song was transmitted digitally to radio stations on February 12 2008 at 6:30pm EST for immediate airplay via All Access and made its debut on Los Angeles radio station Power 106.[3] "Touch My Body" premiered on Chicago radio station B96, ahead of schedule at 4:00pm.[4][5] The single officially went for adds on radio station playlists on February 19 2008.[3][6]

Carey performed the song on Saturday Night Live on March 15 2008 and then again on March 24 2008, the single's digital release date, during the live season premiere party of the hit MTV series The Hills. Carey performed "Touch My Body" mixed together with I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. There was a controversial performance of the song on Good Morning America where a backing track skipped several times throughout the song. Towards the end of the song Carey sings "Stop singing my part now, baby!" to a back-up singer doing her parts. Accusations of lip-syncing erupted all over the internet, and Carey even addresses the situation after the performance saying: "A little creative...try to bring something new to the moment everytime!", while the audience roared in applause.

Critical reception

Critics' reviews of the song have been generally positive. Billboard was quite positive, saying that "this sensual jam is 100% Mariah, packed with satisfying harmonic layers and hooky background 'oh's,' supersonic verses and a chorus as catchy as a winter sniffle",[7] and Blender stated that it was a "pop genius making genius pop".[8] Bill Lamb from About.com also gave "Touch My Body" a positive review, giving it 4 out of 5 stars, stating that the single "is simple, sexy elegance from one of the most enduring of pop stars".[9] Newsday also named it as the "Song of the Week", commenting that it was "the best opening single she's had since "Heartbreaker".[10] Digital Spy was also positive, saying "its cooing, sensual charms soon take hold, suggesting the wind's still very much behind the Carey comeback bandwagon".[11]

Some critics were less positive. Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani said that the single "isn't exactly filled with combustible energy and it lacks the full-throttle belting that accompanied the Return of the Voice three years ago, but it features all of the characteristics one expects from a latter-day Mariah track".[12] Rolling Stone gave it 3.5 stars in its March 6 2008 issue, as they felt that "this hyperdirty single [has] Mariah's storied vocal range...blunted in favor of generic, highly digitized heavy breathing, [but it is] a spare, slick track composed mostly of synths and finger snaps".[13]

Chart performance

After only a day's worth of airplay, "Touch My Body" entered the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart at #78 the chart week of February 23 2008.[14] It also debuted at #57 on the Billboard Hot 100 as the "Hot Shot" debut a week later.[15] So far, "Touch My Body" sold 1,153,694 million legal downloads in United States of America.[citation needed]

Following the song's digital release, on April 2 2008, it was announced that "Touch My Body" became Carey's 18th #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, pushing her to second place among artists with the most #1 singles in the rock era and first place as a solo artist in the same category, surpassing Elvis Presley. The achievement was attributed to a record-breaking digital sales debut, as 286,000 copies were sold in its first week of availability.[1] The single has been certified Platinum by RIAA.[citation needed]

It entered the Canadian Hot 100 at #97[16] and has peaked at #2.

"Touch My Bedy" debuted at number 6 in UK Singles Chart and has peaked number 5.

In Eurochart Hot 100, "Touch My Body" has reached numebr 3. In Europe the song was a top 10 hit in Greece, Slovakia, Swiss, Germany, Italy, Norway and Checz Republic.[17] In France "Touch My Body" peaking at number 16 and sits on chart 9 weeks. In Portugal, "Touch My Body" almost entered in top 10, peaking at number 11. The song stayed in chart for 16 consecutive weeks.

In Oceania "Touch My Body" did well in charts. In Australia, the single has peaked at number 17 and in New Zeland was a top 3 hit.[18][19]

The single was a huge success in Brazil peaking at number 1.[20]

In Asia, the song was also a success. It has reached number 2 in Taiwan and number 6 in Turkey.[21][22]

The music video was directed by Brett Ratner. Carey reported that Ratner was commisioned to direct and film the video due to the fact that he also directed Carey's videos for "I Still Believe", "Heartbreaker", "Thank God I Found You", "It's like That", and "We Belong Together".[23] In an interview with AllHipHop.com, Ratner said, "Mariah is musically at the top of her game and has never looked better... This will be our 6th music video we have collaborated on and definitely the best one yet visually, as well as musically. The video for "Touch My Body" is the perfect combination of fantasy and comedy with Mariah looking more beautiful than she has ever looked, ever."[23] The video was filmed at Lenny Kravitz's house. VH1 posted a 45-second sneak peek on their blog on February 26, and subsequently posted the video in its entirety at midnight on February 27 2008; the video was also posted on the Island Records website.[26][27][28]On March 5 2008 the "Touch My Body" music video debuted at #1 on MTV's TRL countdown and on March 14 it took the #1 spot on BET's 106 & Park "Top 10 Live" countdown.[29]
