Duffy, Australian Capital Territory
Duffy (postcode: 2609) is a suburb in the Canberra district of Weston Creek. As of the 2001 census there were 2,989 people living in Duffy. Duffy was named in honour of Sir Charles Gavan Duffy the 8th Premier of Victoria. Streets in the suburb of Duffy are named after Australian dams and reservoirs. Duffy was gazetted as a placename in 1970.
Duffy Primary School and Duffy Preschool are located next to the Duffy shops on Burrinjuck Ave. The Duffy community oval is located nearby.
Duffy was the suburb to receive the most damage in the Canberra bushfires of 2003, 200 homes were destroyed in Duffy as well as the local petrol station. Narrabundah Hill which borders the western edge of Duffy is managed by ACT Forestry and had contained a mature pine plantation before the fires. As of 2005 work is under way to place a new oak plantation on the hill and surrounding areas.
As with most of Canberra Duffy's only scheduled public transport is the publicly run ACTION bus system. Bus routes 25, 225, 28,29 and flexibus 925 run through the suburb. Buses terminate at Woden, Cooleman Court and Civic.
