Unbridled
Unbridled, a thoroughbred racehorse born in 1987, was the Champion 3-year-old male in 1990. The brilliant colt was sired by Fappiano (10 wins in 17 starts) and his dam Gana Facil, by Le Fabuleux. His career record stands at 8 wins, 6 places and 6 shows in 24 starts. He earned $4,489,475 from 2 to 4 years of age on the racetrack. Unbridled won the 1990 Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont Park and captured the Kentucky Derby, Florida Derby and second in the Preakness Stakes that same year. At 2, he won the What A Pleasure Stakes at Calder and the Deputy Minister Handicap at Gulfsteam Park, at 4.
Unfortunately, he underwent two operations at Hagyard-Davidson-McGee veterinary clinic, near Lexington in September of 2001. He was euthanized Thursday, October 18, at the clinic after a severe bout of colic. The 14-year-old stallion was treated at the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., where it was determined that the symptoms rendered his condition inoperable. He was put down at 6:00 p.m. and the thoroughbred racing world wept. Unbridled's original troubles started with the removal of more than three feet of his intestine on September 21, then he suffered a setback in his recovery five days later, and a second operation was performed at that time. This was too much even for this great champ.
He had sired 292 runners that produced 183 winners (30 of those stakes winners and 5 were 2yo.) out of 437 foals earning over $31 million by 2000. He will live on through continuing foals each season, but there will only be one, Unbridled.
He has been a great sire producing many Breeders' Cup, Triple Crown and Grade 1 Stakes winners. Some of these horses include...
