The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (located at Hauz Khas) (formerly College of Engineering & Technology Delhi), commonly known as IIT-Delhi or IIT-D, is a major college of engineering in Delhi, India. It forms a part of the league along with other IITs in India: the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee.
History
The institute was established as College of Engineering & Technology, Delhi on August 21, 1961. Its foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.
After less than two years of existence, Parliament of India amended Institutes of Technology Act, and upgraded the institute as Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The IIT Delhi main building was formally opened by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then President of India, on March 2, 1968.
Campus
IIT Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. The longitudinal campus of 320 acres [1] is surrounded by the beautiful Hauz Khas area and monuments such as the Qutub Minar. The campus is also close to other educational institutions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The inside of the campus resembles a well planned city with gardens, lawns, residential complexes and wide clean roads. The campus has its own water supply and backup electricity supply along with shopping complexes to cater to the daily needs of residents.
The overall IIT-D campus is divided into four main zones:
- Student Residential Zone
- Faculty and Staff Residential Zone
- Student Recreational Area, that includes the Student Activity Center (SAC), football stadium, cricket ground, basketball courts, hockey field, lawn tennis courts.
- Academic Zone that includes department offices, lecture theaters, libraries and workshops.
The student residential zone is divided into two main sectors --one for men's hostels and another for women's hostels.
Hostels
There are, in total, 11 hostels (9 for boys and 2 for girls). There are also apartments for married students. All the hostels (Known as Houses) are named after various mountain ranges in India --Shivalik, Aravali, Himadri, Jwalamukhi, Karakoram, Kailash, Kumaon, Nilgiri, Satpura, Vindhyachal and Zanskar. The residential apartments are named after ancient Indian universities --Taxila and Nalanda.
Each hostel has a capacity of around 400 students though some hostels can house 600 students[citation needed]. However the women's hostels have a much smaller capacity. Each hostel has its own mess, a common room where residents can watch television and read magazine and newspapers and a visiting room where residents can receive their guests. In addition, each hostel has its own computer room facility, although its use has declined severely in past few years because increasingly, students now own personal computers in their rooms. All the hostel rooms are provided with an internet connection, a facility which has caused much debate among the faculty of the institute over the allegation that students spend much of their time on web-surfing and LAN gaming instead of completing their assignments and projects. No such facility is although provided in the residential apartments and their residents use the facilities of an assigned hostel.
Every hostel has a warden, who is a faculty of the college, and a caretaker. Hostels are in general self managed by students, with the warden not interfering in the hostel affairs, other than the clearing of bills and budget. A House Secretary is elected by the students for managing the affairs of the hostel, who is assisted by a maintenance secretary, a cultural secretary(called cultu) and a sports secretary. Elections for the different positions are held in the end of March. There are 13 representatives(called reps) of the hostel, each representing one of the clubs of the Board for Cultural and Recreational Activities(BRCA), Board for Student Publication(BSP) and Board for Student Welfare(BSW). There are captains for each of the sports teams of the hostels that include Cricket, Tennis, Squash, Table Tennis, Hockey, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Athletics and Weightlifting.
There exists great inter hostel rivalry between hostels as they compete to win the trophies of the different boards by winning the various cultural and sports events that are held throughout the academic year. The BRCA and the BSA trophy are the most sought after trophies of the college.
Important inter hostel cultural events of the college are-
Music club- Eastern Night, Western night, Fusion Night, Music Manoranjan.
Dance and Dramatics Club(DnD)- Duo Dance, Group Dance, Stage Play, Street Play.
Quizzing Club(QC)- Various competitive and non-competitive quizzing events.
English Debating and Literary Club(EDLC)- Parliamentary Debate, other competitive and non-competitive events like word Games and Just a Minute(JAM).
Hindi Samiti(HS)- Parliamentary Debate, various other competitive and non-competitive events.
Fine Arts Club(FAC)- Oil Painting, Mask Making, Charcoal Painting, clay Modelling Competition and other non-competitive events.
Film Series Committee(FSC)- Movie Making Competition. Screening of Popular and social awareness movies in the campus though getting low attendances.
Photography and Hobbies Society(PAHS)- Photography Competition, Skating Competion, Website building Competion, SuDoku Competition.
Indoor Sports Club(ISC)- Various competitions of indoor sports like snooker and chess.
Spic Macay- Various concerts of noted Indian artists in the campus.
Ragging at IIT Delhi
Ragging has always been a serious problem at IIT Delhi[by whom?]. The college has been very vigilant on this issue and has taken serious steps to curb it. The most notable cases took place during the summer of 1993 when several students from the hostels of Jwalamukhi and Karakoram among others were expelled for several semesters for incidents of mass ragging. The sentences were handed out after all-night sessions involving the then Dean of IIT (Prof HC Gupta) and the concerned students[citation needed]. Another notable ragging case took place in August 2003 when a first year student Prakash Rajpurohit (of electrical engineering stream) fled(ran away) from IIT Delhi due to severe ragging. His father later registered a police complaint at the Hauz Khas police station. This later led to the arrest of four accused third year students. Later Rajpurohit returned to IIT Delhi after his safety was assured by the police.[2] [3] [4] [5]
Student Activity Center
The Student Activity Center or SAC is a part of the Student Recreation Zone in IIT Delhi. The SAC is mainly intended for extracurricular activities of the students. The SAC consists of a gymnasium, swimming pool, a pool room, three squash courts, two table tennis rooms, a music room, a fine arts room and a meeting room which is commonly used to organize quizzing and debating events. The SAC also consists of an Open Air Theater in which concerts of various kinds are hosted. Students can also use the radio broadcast facility in the SAC although its use has declined over the years.
Departments and Centers
IIT Delhi has 13 departments, 11 multi-disciplinary centers, and 2 schools of excellence. Together they offer around 700 courses every semester.[6]
Departments
IIT Delhi has 13 departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. The HoD heads the department for a period of two years after which a new head is appointed. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Mechanical Engineering Department, offer two or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program.
