Alpha is the name of a course in Christianity. It is loosely within neo-Evangelicalism.

Structure

The Alpha course is organized as a series of evening session, beginning with a meal, a talk (often shown on video of Nicky Gumbel, and discussion. The content fequently refers to C. S. Lewis

History

Alpha began at Holy Trinity Brompton, a Church of England church in London, England. In 1990 the Rev. Nicky Gumbel took over the Alpha course, which began a rapid expansion.

In 2004, over 25,000 courses are offered in many countries, and in many Christian denominations.

Alpha organizations hold national initiatives, often purchasing advertising in many media.
