.root is an Internet top-level domain which has been observed to exist, but no explanation of its purpose has ever been given. It is apparently created and maintained by Verisign, the company which operates some of the root servers of the Internet's domain name system and constructs the root-level zone file used by all of them.

The only entry in its zone is vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root, which consists of a TXT record containing the word "plenus", which is Latin for "full" or "complete".

The existence of the .root TLD can be verified from the command line of Unix-style operating systems using this command:

dig vrsn-end-of-zone-marker-dummy-record.root. any @a.root-servers.net
