Main Page error reports
To report an error you have noticed on the current Main Page or tomorrow's Main Page please add it to the appropriate section below. Errors can be fixed faster when a correction is offered, so please be specific. You can do this by pressing the [edit] button to the right of the appropriate section's heading. Also, please sign your post using four tildes (~~~~)
Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 15:35 on December 29, 2024 (UTC). (Update)
Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.
References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages when there is disagreement, so it is best to achieve consensus and make any necessary changes there first.

Attack on Syria
Notwitstanding the fact that the current wording buys the Pengaton press release version wholse, it is also problematic in its description of reality. The wording at present is "United States Special Forces carry out a raid on a foreign fighter logistics network". In short, U.S. forces attack foreign fighters in Syria? Who are the foreigners here really? Is a U.S. soldier in Syria less foreign than a Syrian, Lebanese or Yemenite? Moreover, in Syria no Arab is considered a foreigner (ajnabi). --Soman (talk) 19:49, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- When reporting an error, please also give a suggestion as to what it should be reworded as. ffm 12:41, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'm satisfied with the wording in the current version. --Soman (talk) 13:14, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Comma after states and countries
A comma is missing in the phrase "A bomb attack in Zagreb, Croatia kills Ivo Pukanić ...". Without the comma, the phrase falls into the following two clauses: "A bomb attack in Zagreb" and "Croatia kills Ivo Pukanić ...". The first clause us incomplete (a verb is missing), and the second clause is false.
The same thing could be said about the phrase "A bomb blast in Imphal, India kills 17 ...".
The qualifications Croatia and India, respectively, are to be regarded as parentheticals, and the parenthetical should be concluded with a comma, except for at the beginning or end of a sentence (where it would result in double punctuation).

- Concur, per comma (punctuation). A comma is also missing between "Belarus" and "which" in the FA blurb. Aille (talk) 00:32, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Since I (ignorantly?) opposed a similar change a few days ago, let me rectify it by correcting the FA blurb :) Fvasconcellos (t·c) 00:41, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

- The comma (punctuation) article was edited recently, removing support for my position. Previous versions clearly stated that there should be concluding commas. LarRan (talk) 12:16, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- There should be concluding commas. I am adding a cite tag to the assertion that this isn't universal. 168.9.120.8 (talk) 17:44, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not so sure. Croatia isn't a parenthetical, the term 'Zagreb, Croatia' could be treated as a single subject by itself, in the same way we would say 'blast in New York City kills...' and not 'blast in New York City, kills...'. That being said for comprehension's sake an extra comma could be useful. My formal writing has been criticized for having too many commas though so I'm probably not in the bast position to comment one way or the other.--Random89 21:28, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
- Croatia is a parenthetical. Zagreb is where something happens. If I don't know where Zagreb is, I should look it up... or the author of the sentence should include a parenthetical in the form of "In Zagreb, Croatia, blah blah blah." In your New York City counter-example, New York City plays the role of Zagreb, not Croatia. A more accurate analogy would be "A blast in New York City, New York, kills..." 168.9.120.8 (talk) 12:01, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Addendum: I see that the "this is not universal" bit in comma (punctuation) has been removed. The user who removed it correctly stated that the usage of the concluding comma is not universal; however, this doesn't make the omission of that comma correct. 168.9.120.8 (talk) 12:05, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
