category

Any article related to this task force should be marked by adding ACW-task-force=yes to the {{WPMILHIST}} project banner at the top of its talk page (see the project banner instructions for more details on the exact syntax). This will automatically place it into Category:American Civil War task force articles (and into Category:United States military history task force articles).

Portal

The following portal is associated with this project:

Categories and lists

States

See Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. states for more information on coordinating state articles and categories.

Category:U.S. states in the American Civil War

Cities

We're in the midst of a task similar to what we did with states for cities with Civil War histories. Some examples are New York City, New Orleans and Washington, D.C..

Category: U.S. cities in the American Civil War

People

ALL biographies should follow the Wikipedia Manual of Style, which is incorporated into the excellent guidelines for Civil War bios at User:Hlj/CWediting.

General officers should be classified into Category:Union Army generals or Category:Confederate Army generals. In some cases, the generals (North and South) should ALSO be categorized as Category:United States Army generals to reflect their standing in the Regular Army. The same holds true for Navy admirals (Category:Union Navy admirals and Category:United States Navy admirals).

Likewise, minor officers should be categorized into Category:United States Army officers or Category:Confederate Army officers. At some point, it may be advisable to create a separate Category:Union Army officers.

The Category:People of the American Civil War should NOT be used redundantly with the above categories, but should be reserved for enlisted military men, civilians, politicians, and similar people.

There are also other categories such as Category:Women in the American Civil War for notable females, Category:American Civil War surgeons, Category:American Civil War chaplains, etc.

Significant personalities should also be categorized by their main state they served or lived in during the Civil War (for example, Category:Ohio in the American Civil War). These state categories should include prominent locations (forts, battlefields, structures, etc.), leading politicians (Congressmen, governors, Cabinet members, etc.), events, and other articles with a tie-in to helping guide the user to a broader understanding of the state during the war years.

Theaters, campaigns, and battles

There should, eventually, be a tree originating in three distinct sub-categories of Category:Military operations of the American Civil War:

The tree would then take the following form (using Gettysburg as an example):

Eastern

Western

Trans-Mississippi

Lower Seaboard & Gulf

Pacific

Confederate Armed Services
