Rosie Swale-Pope
Rosie Swale-Pope (born 2 October 1946) is a British woman who completed running around the world (to and from Tenby in Wales) on 25th August 2008.
Life
Beginning in the 1970s, Swale-Pope sailed around the world from England via Australia with her first husband and daughter Eve on a 30-foot catamaran, the Annaliese. Their second child James was born on board. No novice to adventure travel, in 1983, she sailed solo across the Atlantic and later trekked 2,000 miles through Chile on horseback.
At 48 she took up running and has since completed several marathons.
Current Adventure
When her second husband, Clive, 73, died of prostate cancer in 2002, she decided to run around the world to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Charity and an orphanage in Kitezh, Russia.
She runs harnessed to a wagon designed for sleeping, shelter and storage. Her son James maintains her website and Geoff Hall organises supplies and equipment to reach her around the world. In the Faroes, she took part in an organised midnight hike to take in the scenery. She also gave cultural talks explaining about grooming while on the road, how she met a naked man with a gun, how Siberian wolves ran with her for a week and completing the Chicago marathon on the way.
Route
Oct 2 2003, she started from her home town of Tenby in Wales UK where her first footfall is engraved in flagstone on her front step. By April 5 2004, she reached Moscow, Russia. On September 15 2005, she reached Magadan, in far eastern Russia. After extreme adventures in the roadless Alaskan Winter, she reached the road again in April 17 2006, and in October 2006 she was in Edmonton, Canada. Four years later, Oct 2 2007, she reached Manhattan, New York in the U.S.A.
She left Canada by air from St John's on Jan 24 2008 to make a short visit to Greenland, where she flew to Iceland on Feb 9 2008 and continued running to eastern Iceland. On May 29 2008 she reached The Faroe Islands onboard the ferry Norrøna. [1]
On June 18, 2008 she arrived Scrabster, in Scotland's far north and is currently running from Scrabster, Scotland back home to Tenby in west Wales. A diagnosis of stress fractures of the leg was made following her experiencing pain during the last part of her journey. However her finishing plan is not changed.
During the 1970s, Rosie, a keen naturist, wrote of her traveling experiences for Mayfair men's magazine.
Rosie has successfully completed the journey, and has returned home to Tenby on August 25th 2008, at 2:18pm. A large crowd of Tenby residents and Bank Holiday visitors turned out to witness her return and welcome her home.[[1]] After the run, she will write a book about her experiences.
