Circus is the sixth studio album from American pop singer Britney Spears. The album was announced by Jive Records on September 15, 2008,[2] and is set for release in the United States on December 2, 2008,[2] which is Spears's 27th birthday. The first single, "Womanizer", became Spears's first number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 since her debut "...Baby One More Time", almost 10 years prior.[3][4] The second single will be the title track "Circus", announced the same day as the track listing.[5]

Background

It was confirmed in May 2008 that Spears was "in the experimental stages of a new album."[6] Spears's manager, Larry Rudolph, announced in a July 2008 press release that Spears would be "spending her summer in the studio, working on a brand new album [...] with a team of top-notch producers and songwriters, and we're very excited about what she's accomplished so far."[7] In an August 2008 interview with OK! magazine, Spears said that the album is "more urban. I'm working with producers who are just amazing [...] There is this fresh new energy."[8] "I'm writing every day, right here at the piano in this living room... This is my best work ever."[9]

Shannon Holtzapffel, a dancer in the leaked video of Spears dancing to "Mannequin", told The Daily Telegraph, "When we were finished rehearsing, they'd take the CD and put it in a safe. I've never experienced anything like it before."[10]

Rolling Stone's fall music preview stated that Spears "has recorded some 30 tracks for her sixth studio album." Spears continued, "I came into the studio because I had some free time, but once I started working, I was like, 'This is cool!' It just happened."[11]

In the United Kingdom, the album will be in direct competition with the new Take That album, titled The Circus, released on the same day.[12] Take That's manager claimed the album's title choice was a coincidence, and that the band had worked "months in advance " and would not be changing the title.[13]

Production

Danja and Bloodshy & Avant, who produced several tracks from Blackout, both announced independently that they were recording with Spears again.[14] Vocal producer Jim Beanz told Us Weekly that he had also been in the studio with Spears.[15] He said of Spears: "Everyone has personal stuff, but a true professional doesn’t bring it into the studio."[16]

In her interview with OK! magazine, Spears revealed that she was making a debut of her musicianship with Circus working closely with Harvey Mason of The Underdogs.[17] Spears commented, "I wanted to experiment with producers to make sure I have the right sound for my instrumentation, I haven't worked like this before, like the Underdogs, who have a Timbaland kind of sound".[11] According to the Los Angeles Times, Guy Sigsworth - who previously produced the singles "Everytime" and "Someday (I Will Understand)" - spent time in the studio with Spears.[18] Max Martin, who wrote Spears's first hit, "...Baby One More Time", has produced his "best work ever".[19] Dr. Luke (who actually often collaborates with Martin) has produced songs for the album, including the title track,[20] with up-and-comer Benny Blanco.[21] Nicole Morier, who co-wrote Blackout's "Heaven on Earth", wrote several songs with Britney in spring 2008; "Mmm Papi" and the European & Deluxe Edition bonus track "Rock Me In" came out of these sessions. Another notable collaborator is The Outsyders, an Atlanta-based production team, who produced the album's first single.[20]

Junkie XL,[22] Lil Jon,[23] Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins,[24] Sean Garrett,[6] Taio Cruz,[25], JR Rotem and Lady GaGa, worked on songs for Spears that did not make Circus.

Critical reception

The Sun newspaper in the U.K. had an exclusive preview of the album and were the first ones to post the world's first reviews of Circus.[26] On their review the paper wrote, "Britney Spears has never been a shrinking violet and her latest album Circus takes her bravado to startling new histeria." If U Seek Amy was the paper's favorite track commenting "It's a great track. A stomping robo pop number with clattering kettle drums and Brit being quite frank about the opinion she holds of herself. The title seems innocuous enough, but it has an entirely different meaning. It goes: “All the boys and all the girls want to if you seek Amy”. That clearly doesn’t make much sense. But if you repeat it twice as fast, you can hear a quite shocking statement: “All the boys and all the girls want to F.U.C.K. me.” I can’t see Leona Lewis releasing anything like that in the future.[27] they also talked about different tracks. Kill The Lights focuses on the star's relationship with the paparazzi, the lights referring to flash bulbs. It's a brilliant disco banger with an elastic bass line and plenty of spooky keyboard work. During Kill The Lights Brit addresses her camera-toting tormentors with the brilliant line: "Is that money in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" The collection's title track "Circus" sees Brit morphing ever closer to Madonna. Circus has more than a passing resemblance to the industrial hip-hop-powered tracks on Hard Candy. And finally "Out From Under" is a stirring break-up ballad up there with the best."[28]

According to Digital Spy, "Circus is essentially a sequel to last year's Blackout album - it has the same fierce electro sound, but Britney sounds more confident and there's less reliance on the vocoder." Circus also has something Blackout didn't - a proper, teary-eyed ballad. It's called 'Out From Under' and it's really quite lovely." "The title track is a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style thump. "I'm the ringleader, I call the shots, I'm a firecracker, I like it hot," Britney sings on the verses".Britney's introduced as "our very own pop princess, now Queen of Pop" on 'Kill The Lights'. That's her off Madonna's Christmas card list then, The song itself is almost as knowing as Blackout's 'Piece Of Me', with Britney taking the paparazzi to task. "You don't like me, I don't like you," she tells them. "Only difference is you still listen, I don't have to".'If U Seek Amy', on which Britney actually reunites with Max Martin, is 50% glam, 50% rave. The title has nothing to do with a certain Miss Winehouse and makes more sense if you say it quickly... just don't do so in polite company. [29]

Popjustice: " 'Cirucs', This is the title track. This means the song's called 'Circus', and it's from the album 'Circus'. "I run a tight ship," Britney announces, "so beware - I'm like the ringleader, I call the shots, I'm like a firecracker I make it hot, now put a show". What does this mean? Well, she is a ringleader on a ship - we presume this is something to do with a special circus on a cruise liner of some sort. Basically Britney is comparing herself to lots of things at the same time. Your English teacher will tell you this is a silly thing to do - but Britney is allowed to do it, because she is Britney. The track comes with massive thudding electronic R&B production and there's a lot of stopping and starting, including a a built-in MTV-style dance breakdown segment. The chorus lyric is "all eyes on me in the centre of the ring just like a circus" but the best bit's the bridge, with its "I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins, spotlight on me and I'm ready to break, I'm like a performer with this world as a stage" bit. There's all sorts of other stuff about "don't stand there watching me, following me, show me what you can do". Bits of it are a lot like 'Break The Ice' from the last album, but with an extra layer of Big Production." 'Out from Under', 'Blackout' didn't have any big ballads so here is one for 'Circus', it's incredibly similar to this version....[4]....of the song but with more guitar (weedy guitar, not big proper guitar). The production's a lot less sparse and a great deal more 'Britney ballad' (in the 'I'm Not A Girl Not Yet A Woman' tradition). Basically the most interesting thing about Britney's version that you can't hear on the Joanna Pacitti original is the finale, which ends with a great "from under, from under, from under" bit." "If U Seek Amy, This is the one people are excited about because the words "if you seek Amy" sound like "F-U-C-K me". After a "la la la la la la la la, la la la la la la la la" intro the song sort of throws itself into a ridiculous faux-lesbo 'romp' in which Britney looks for girl called Amy in a club ("oh baby baby have you seen Amy tonight, is she in the bathroom?"), can't find her while the club's closing, bangs on about "love me hate me, say what you want about me but all the boys and all the girls are ready to f-u-c-k me" and then goes bonkers over a lot over a thunderous Timbaland vs Scooter production job. There are some "ha ha he he ho ho ho" bits, a great whooshing noise into the final chorus and an overriding sense that this might be one of Britney's most ridiculous recordings to date." "'VERDICT': It's 'Blackout 2.0' - this is good news, 'Blackout' was a phenomenal album - but seems to include a lot of posturing and also seems to be quite gimmicky, which hopefully won't extend across the entire album. The inclusion of a song like 'Out From Under' suggests that this album, as a whole, might be a bridge between 'In The Zone' and 'Blackout', or at least a bridge between 'Blackout' and a next album more along the 'In The Zone' lines. That didn't make any sense at all, did it. Anyway if these are the very best songs on the album we're probably heading for a 7/10 sort of affair but it's hard to second guess a Britney album so what it will end up like is anybody's guess."[30]

Promotion

In order to promote the album Jive Records set up the (310) 341-4438 hotline, were you can leave a message to Britney, some of the callers received a phone call with Britney Spears.[31] Some callers could text the message to 80888.

MTV will be airing a 90-minute documentary tentatively titled For the Record, on November 30th, 2008. The show is about her return to the pop music spotlight.[32] Spears's official website will be releasing a series of posters to promote "Circus."[33]

Live performances

Spears's live comeback began on November 7 with a cameo appearance at the Dodger Stadium show of Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour.[34] Midway through "Human Nature", Spears joined Madonna on stage.[35]

MTV UK, MSNBC and Simon Cowell himself have reported that Spears will perform at the British reality television contest The X Factor.[36][37] This will mark her first return to the United Kingdom since her Onyx Hotel Tour. Spears will be performing Womanizer on the show.[38]

According to her official website[39], Spears will be performing on France's top-rated Star Academy, the Gallic version of "The X Factor" on Friday, November 28. One day later, she will perform on Britain's "X-Factor" on November 29th which will complete her mini European promo tour. (The date for this perfomance is rumored, although the performance itself has been confirmed by her official site) -- Brit will be spending Thanksgiving in Europe. [40]

On the October 6, 2008 episode of Good Morning America, host Robin Roberts stated that Spears would be performing Womanizer on the show in December.[41] Spears will be celebrating her 27th birthday on the show along with the performance in Bryant Park.[42]

It was reported by Daily Mirror on September 13, 2008 that Spears will be performing at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas on New Years Eve to promote her new album, in what would be "one of the biggest comebacks in history".[43]

2009 World Tour

Shortly after the New York radio station Z100 played her new song, "Womanizer", Spears made a surprise appearance on the show and announced she would be going on a worldwide tour in spring of 2009 to support the album, and that rehearsals would begin in January for a March start.[44] Spears signed a deal with live entertainment company AEG to produce the tour.[45][46] Wade Robson will be directing the tour and choreographing a third of it.[47]

According to UK newspaper The Sun, Spears will be performing a 2 week stint in London at The O2 arena in June, 2009.[48]

Singles

"Womanizer"

On September 15, Jive released a statement announcing the title of her sixth studio album, Circus as well as the first single, "Womanizer". The single was released to radio stations on September 26, and the release date for the album is December 2, Spears's 27th birthday.[66] On October 15, the song made a record-breaking jump to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record set by T.I.'s Live Your Life. It also garnered first-week download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003. It marked Spears's first number one single on the Hot 100 since her debut, "...Baby One More Time".[67]

"Circus"

On October 31, 2008, it was announced on Spears's official website that "Circus" would be released as the album's second single. It has been announced that single will be released in late November or early December to follow the album's release and to commemorate Spears's birthday.[68]

Leaks

  • In early September a video of Spears rehearsing a dance routine for the song "Mannequin" was leaked by MSN.[69] Hours after the leak, the video received over three million views.[69]
  • On September 19, 2008, a low quality 40-second clip from her new single "Womanizer" was leaked via Nashville's 107.5 The River.[70] Jive later released a statement to MTV stating that the clip was from the "rough mix" of the track, not the finalized single.[71] The DJ who played the clip was later suspended and the network was fined $250,000 by Jive Records.[72]
  • On November 7, 2008, the track "Kill The Lights" was leaked to the internet.[73]
