Florida State Road 901
Florida State Road 901 is the former Florida Department of Transportation designation of Vanderbilt Drive, connecting Bonita Beach Boulevard (former SR 865) in Bonita Beach, Florida to 111th Avenue North/Immokalee Road (former SR 846, now CR 862) in Naples. Signed in the 1980s and 1990s, SR 901 was transitioned to county maintenance in the late 1990s, becoming Collier Country Road 901 by the early 2000s.
Four-mile-long Vanderbilt Drive's northern and southern ends are community residential streets, while the middle three miles of the road pass by two golf courses and relatively wild land in and adjacent to Little Hickory Bay, Barefoot Beach State Preserve, and (across Vanderbilt Channel) Delnor-Wiggins State Park. While some commercially-prepared maps indicated that SR 901 extended further south along Vanderbilt Drive and east along Vanderbilt Beach Road to Tamiami Trail (US 41/SR 45), there was never any SR 901 signage along this stretch of road; indeed, it still has no Collier County Road designation.
The SR 901 designation is an anomaly in the Florida State Roads system as, for a three-digit State Road designation, the first digit would indicate that most of the road would be south of Florida State Road 90, the east-west section of the Tamiami Trail, and the last two digits would indicate that it would be on the Atlantic coast of Florida, east of SR 907 and 907A in Miami Beach or the Card Sound Bridge (former State Road 905A). Because such a placement was (and is) not plausible (it became impossible on the formation of Biscayne National Monument, precluding any State Roads on Elliott Key), the number was used here instead.
Former State Road 888
At roughly the midpoint of Vanderbilt Drive is Wiggins Pass Road, a spur connecting CR 901 and US 41. In the 1980s and 1990s, the 1.0 mile (1.6 km) long connector was signed Florida State Road 888 as it provided the only direct access between the two roads for about two miles in either direction. While development has touched the road, now designated Collier County Road 888, for the time being, it has maintained some of the same scenic quality as the middle stretch of Vanderbilt Drive.
