Combat Arms is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter developed by South Korea based developer Doobic Studios and published by Nexon[1].

History

The closed beta started on May 29, 2008 exclusively through FilePlanet and ran for one week. It ended on June 6th.[2] This beta was limited to users from North America, South America and Oceania. In the closed beta, 4 maps and 30 weapons were available. On June 26, Combat Arms went into in Pre-Open Beta Phase, whereby the game was open to the public, but it was still being tested and changed to prepare for Open Beta.[3] Pre-Open Beta was also limited to users from North America, South America and Oceania. The Official Launch of Combat Arms started on July 11, 2008. On the 8th of August 2008, Nexon announced[4] that a Combat Arms service shall be started by Nexon Europe, for European Players. On 25 September 2008, the Combat Arms Europe Teaser website[5] was activated by Nexon Europe. On 28th October 2008, Nexon Europe started the Combat Arms Europe Closed Beta testing. That testing finished on the 11th November 2008.

Combat Arms is entirely a multiplayer game with no single-player mode (although the Korean Version has a scenario/co-op mode that might be released in the Global Version), and contains 4 game modes as of now: Elimination (Team Deathmatch), One Man Army (Deathmatch), Search & Destroy (Bomb mode), and Capture the Flag. Players who start a room (known as the Room Moderator/Master/Host) are able to choose the map as well as in game settings (game mode, weapons allowed, etc). The game master changes to the next player in line automatically if the original master leaves, and so on. This does not affect the game, since games are hosted on Nexon servers, not by the master player.

The game also includes a Black Market. The Black Market (aka "BM") uses currency known as "Nexon Cash" (or NX) which is bought with real money. The Black Market supplies mainly cosmetic items. Things like different character skins, reskins of available guns, and other pieces of clothing are available for purchase. Nexon promises that the Black Market will not supply any gun or item that cannot already be bought through the in-game shop with earned GP. This is to keep the playing ground fair between NX and non-NX users.

Most weapons are bought through the in game shop by using currency called GP. In addition to this, there are some weapons that have rank requirements. The main weapons are free for any player of any rank to use, however. The ranking system follows the ranks of the military with the lowest being Trainee and highest being General of the Army.

Modifications

Nearly all weapons can be modified with all, two or either of the following: Suppressor,Scope and Extended Clip/Magazine. The suppressor reduces gunshot noise, damage and recoil/muzzle flash depending on the suppressor attached. The scope zooms in, increasing accuracy for the user, and the Extended clip increases the amount of ammunition placed in one clip but usually does not increase ammo quantity. The modifications are usually around 100-200 GP for a day.

Patching

Nexon releases bi-monthly content patches and occasionally emergency patches to solve any server, glitching, bug and/or current hacking problems. Patches can also add new inventory items and/or maps for players. One patch per month usually consists of a new map. The game will usually go down for four to eight hours during patching.

Money

Real money can be used to buy cosmetic items and weapons in-game. The currency in Combat Arms is GP which actually means "Gear Points" (only in Combat Arms) but is commonly mistaken to mean "Game Points". Money can be earned from playing games, awarded by leveling up, or buying it with real life cash. Items in the shop can be bought for 1 day, 7 days, 30 days or 90 days. The GP cost depends on the players choice of length in purchase. Items cannot be purchased permanently. In addition, Nexon Cash (NX cash) allows players to purchase items from the Black Market. Like the in-game shop, not all Black Market items are permanent. For the most part, Black Market items last for 3 months (90 days). NX can be obtained by purchasing Nexon cards at many of their venues.
