Image:Ferrocactus cylindraceus.jpeg Permissions
John, thanks for your email.
You note, quite correctly, that the website states "This photo and associated text may not be used except with express written permission from Heath McAllister." That is exactly what is contained in the email exchange I forwarded to you. Just to break it down:
25 Aug 2005 08:48:18 +0100: I emailed Mr McAllister requesting use of his photographs under the terms of the GFDL, explicitly stating in the request:
For Wikipedia to use your material, you must agree to the GNU Free Documentation License (often referred to as the GNU-FDL, or GFDL). In essence, the GFDL allows you to retain the copyright and authorship of your work, but grants permission for others to use, copy, and share your materials freely, and even potentially use them commercially, so long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g., "share-alike"). You can read the complete license at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GFDL.
27 Aug 2005 23:04:28 -0700 (PDT): Mr McAllister emailed me back confirming that he is happy for Wikipedia to use his photographs, but expressing reservations about possible commercial re-use. Clearly not GFDL compliant, so I didn't upload the image.
23 Sep 2005 13:03:36 -0700 (PDT): Mr McAllister emailed me again withdrawing his concerns about possible commercial re-use
... after looking at your Wikipedia site quite abit in the last few weeks, I've decided that Wikipdia is a truly incredible site and I would be proud to be a part of it. So I retract any previous reservations I had about letting people use the pictures from the site for profit, etc. If they do, they do, and if they don't great. But in any case I would just like to extend to you an all around green light to use any of my pictures on CalPhotos ...
In essence, per the terms of my original email request, full permission is granted by Mr McAllister to use any of his photographs on Wikipedia under the terms of the GFDL. I then uploaded the image and forwarded the emails to Permissions. I think that was in the days before the OTRS ticket system was in place, so a ticket number never materialised. I just updated the image source location a couple of days ago and thought it prudent to resubmit the permission emails. This image has been in place, with the correct permission, for over three years. I am therefore at a loss to understand why you think Mr Mcallister has not granted permission for use under the terms of the GFDL. The email exchange demonstrates that this image is officially and explicitly released by Mr McAllister for use on Wikipedia under the terms of a free license.
I'd be grateful if you'd kindly restore the image and allocate an OTRS ticket. Many thanks. --Cactus.man ✍ 09:11, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- If you could reply to the e-mail I sent you via OTRS and get him to change it at the source it could be undeleted. We can't have contradictory information such as "This photo and associated text may not be used except with express written permission from Heath McAllister." John Reaves 09:49, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's the whole point. He has given express written permission. It's not reasonable or even possible to expect external websites to remove copyright disclaimers so that all and sundry can pillage their copyright material at will. Besides, Mr McAllister is just one of hundreds of contributors to that site and it is not under his control. The website is controlled by University of California, Berkeley,CalPhotos, Berkeley Digital Library Project, and that is a standard copyright boilerplate applied to all the image pages. All the necessary permissions are in place. Please undelete the image and apply the necessary OTRS ticket. Thanks. --Cactus.man ✍ 10:02, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well forward that e-mail to OTRS. How is it not reasonable to want the copyright notice to not conflict with the essence of Wikipedia, i.e. the fact that it is free? John Reaves 10:07, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's precisely what I forwarded, the email exchange as described above, granting explicit permission for use under the terms of the GFDL. Did you even read the email exchange I forwarded?

- That's the whole point of the Permissions system, that individual copyright holders do not need to void their protections on their own websites, but permit specific use on Wikipedia. User A sees the copyright disclaimer at the source website, but the OTRS ticket verifies that this is specifically exempted for use on Wikipedia under an appropriate free license - no problem. The copyright holder retains his protection, grants Wikipedia free use, Permissions records this, passerby users are satisfied that all is in order. We do not need to insist on external sites modifying their copyright disclaimers. --Cactus.man ✍ 10:17, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I was confused, but have had the issue clarified now. Essentially, releasing the image as GFDL negates any other claims as the GFDL is irrevocable. All get the template on this image and stat working on your other tickets. John Reaves 16:15, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I see you've added tickets to the other images from the same source, so many thanks for that also. --Cactus.man ✍ 16:51, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Could OTRS help?
Hi there. You handled an OTRS request with Betty Tancock, so perhaps you can help with this issue. An editor had inserted a death date for the previously-thought-to-be-alive Godtfred Holmvang. When I confronted him about it on his talk page, he claimed to be Holmvang's son-in-law and that he did not know of any death notice printed in a newspaper. Would it be possible to use OTRS to confirm his identity and thus verify the information, or would this fall too deep into WP:OR territory? Cheers, CP 16:01, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ask him to find some sort of proof and e-mail to OTRS. I think it'd be kind of hard to confirm his identity since he is a son-in-law. John Reaves 20:20, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice. Cheers, CP 00:58, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hi again. His response was Dear CP, Thankyou for your patience. I could scan Godtfred Holmvang's death certificate. Could you provide me with an exact email address to direct this information and how it should be titled. Thank you again. Jamie. Just so that I'm certain, would you mind providing this information? Cheers, CP 03:06, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Tell him to e-mail the scan to info-en-q [at] wikimedia.com and to let you know when he does so I can search for it. John Reaves 06:09, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- He tells me that it has been sent and "Godtfred Holmvang" is in the title. Cheers, CP 15:42, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Missing John O Lear Page
Dear Mr. Reaves, I am Travis Brandt from Renton, WA recently doing research on John Lear and was suprised to find that Wikipedia had deleted all reference to him. After researching several sources, I confirmed that there are several significant contributions to aviation and so I signed up on Wikipedia because I believe in the founder's vision of sharing all knowledge of humanity with humanity. (I am new to Wikipedia so I do not know if this is the appropriate way to provide information.)
John Olson Lear (Born 1942) is a controversial figure in UFO conspiracy circles and is considered a maverick in aviation circles stemming from being the son of controvertial business man and inventor Bill Lear (Lear Jets).
On May 26, 1996, according to Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), John O Lear was a copilot and crewmember of a LearJet 24 and set the world speed record for Fastest Time Around the World Eastbound flying 22,993 miles, recorded average speed was 563.44 km/h.
Ref: Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) Record: Class C (Aeroplanes) Sub-class C-1f (Landplanes: take off weight 6,000 to 9,000 kg) Group 3 : turbo-jet Speed around the world. Of the total 17 legs, the record for fastest recorded time from: (Manila, Philippines to Osaka, Japan), (Anchorage, AK to Seattle, WA), (Seattle, WA to Los Angeles, CA) have now stood for over 48 years.

Restoration of Forever Free (Sublime tribute album) request
Dear Mr. Reaves,
please restore the Forever Free (sublime tribute album) article. I would like to edit its content. Andrew Wakefield
Hi John - I saw you deleted Andrew Wakefield, but didn't see a reason in the deletion summary. Was there a revision requiring deletion? I'm not clear otherwise on why it was deleted, since he seems clearly notable and I didn't see an AfD or other deletion process. Please feel free to email me rather than respond here as you like. Thanks. MastCell Talk 21:01, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ooops, thanks for catching that. I meant to delete Andrew Wakefield (disambiguation) ( a former disambig, then redirect, with no incoming links). John Reaves 21:07, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. He's a controversial figure, so I thought maybe there was a defamatory diff being deleted and wanted to check with you instead of restoring it myself. Happy editing. MastCell Talk 21:30, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Request to Userfy
A deleting admin has refused several requests to userfy some deleted articles. The articles were discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/William McCracken and I would like them userfied to user:Paulmcdonald/articlename -- you can see a reference to some of the progress made on improving these articles at User:Paulmcdonald/deletedcoach and an essay about the importance to userfy them at WP:CFBWEST. Secret IRC off Wiki consensus building
Why not release the logs? Let's see how often Admins have been violating the most basic values of Wikipedia and gone off-wiki to reach consensus. I have been on here for a while, but never once was it disclosed to me that Wikipedia is governed in secret at Admin only discussion channels. BobDysart (talk) 01:13, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- You may as well ask for a trolling block, calm down. John Reaves 01:37, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Well I've just recieved a warning in that regard. But I was never made aware of a private channel for Admins only and it's disturbing that while editors are under the impression that decisions are made in open consensus, this is in fact not the case. I brought up the issue on an Admin board and had it quickly blanked. BobDysart (talk) 01:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

Nancy Kates
Why did you delete information about the airport incident and then protect the page without any discussion? I have repeatedly asked those who are deleting this to respond on the article's discussion page but no one has.
The airport incident is legitimate and was reported by a variety of reputable news sources. A search for the subject on google results in more hits on the airport incident than on anything else in the article. Please explain.
StradTrumpeter (talk) 14:42, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- You only have three edits, how could you have "repeatedly" asked? Regardless, in unencyclopedic gossip that has no place here regardless of the truth behind it. John Reaves 22:05, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Who are you to decide what's encyclopedic gossip and what's not? I feel as though this is legitimate information. Wikipedia's own article about gossip defines it thusly: Gossip is idle talk or rumor, especially about the personal or private affairs of others.
Ms. Kates is threatening public lawsuits against agencies of the United States government. How is that gossip? StradTrumpeter (talk) 22:49, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- The main issue is the needless and irrelevant discussion of the size of her breasts. If you could work in the story with discussing that, it may be okay for inclusion. John Reaves 23:07, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
The article from sfgate stated twice that the size of her breasts, which isn't even specifically mentioned (i.e. not a specific size), was the reason for the entire incident. That is to say, a woman with average breasts would not have set off the metal detector. Not mentioning this information would make the article incomplete and ambiguous. StradTrumpeter (talk) 23:17, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hey gang! Let's take a break and have some cookies and milk! We'll work it out!--Paul McDonald (talk) 23:19, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Not mentioning that newspaper decided to comment on the size of here breasts would not make the article "incomplete and ambiguous" at all. In fact, the snippet from our article (no longer there) was incongruous in my opinion. So you can either remove that part and put it back or not put the section back at all. The subject herself has expressed her disgust with the fact that a reputable encyclopedia would mention that.John Reaves 23:29, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Okay, lets meet halfway on this. I propose that the section be entered as the following:
"In August of 2008 Kates made headlines when the under wire of her bra set off metal detectors in Oakland International Airport. Airport security required her to remove her bra in an airport bathroom in order to clear security, due to the fact that large under wire bras contain more metal than an average bra. As a result, Kates has stated that she plans to consult with an attorney as well as the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Organization for Women."
This way the size of her breasts is not directly mentioned, but the underlying cause for the incident is revealed to the reader.
And with all due respect to Ms. Kates, just because something that some may find embarassing happens in a public forumn does not invalidate its worth in an article about said person. StradTrumpeter (talk) 23:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Just say "underwire bra". John Reaves 00:38, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
Very well. Here is what I propose:
"In August of 2008 Kates made headlines when the under wire of her bra set off metal detectors in Oakland International Airport. Airport security required her to remove her bra in an airport bathroom in order to clear security, due to the fact that the type of bra she required contained an underwire. As a result, Kates has stated that she plans to consult with an attorney as well as the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Organization for Women." StradTrumpeter (talk) 05:31, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Looks great. John Reaves 20:40, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
So are you going to add that to the article or at least unprotect it? StradTrumpeter (talk) 17:46, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Copy of deleted page
Hi, I got your name from the page of admins who will provide copies of deleted pages. Could you please give me the text of the page List of PlayStation Portable Wi-Fi games just before it was deleted? I don't know how you normally send it, but I created a subpage where you can copypaste it here. Thank you so much! RainbowOfLight Talk 21:18, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Restore deleted page
TPW xeno: ditto for my user page, SVP. :) If you can undo the deletion (i.e. restore text, links, history) that would be great. I found only the text on google; if that's all that's available, I can DIY. link -> --Elvey (talk) 01:34, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I guess I should take the lack of response as a 'no' from John Reaves.--Elvey (talk) 18:31, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Marguerite Perrin
Why do you consider Marguerite Perrin not notable? Jorrit787 (talk) 16:45, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Because some white-trash reality TV 15-minutes of fame lady doesn't deserve an entry in an encyclopedia. John Reaves 16:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
I just made an account for discussing this, so I hope I am doing this in the right way.
This lady is very popular in pop culture and has made national news and national talk shows which would make her a notable figure. (Just do a Google search to see the number of interviews and news stories.)
I would like to see the page reinstated. I had to view a Google cached version of the page since it was deleted. The page was very informative and answered a lot of questions I had that would have taken a lot more research if it wasn't condensed onto a wikipedia page.
Your view of her as white-trash does not disqualify her for an entry on WP. Just search for God Warrior or her name and you will see the scope of her 'notability.'

Riverside SChool page deleted
Hi John, I created the Riverside School - Prague page sometime last fall (under a different User name...I cannot recall my former user name so I created a new one now). I see that the page has been deleted and understand the reasons for it. Is it possible for me to edit or re-create the Riverside School - Prague page under my new user name? Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.30.240.226 (talk) 16:26, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
