Not 4 Sale is the fourth studio album by rapper, Kardinal Offishall, and his first as a member of Konvict Muzik. Akon is the executive producer of the album, released on September 9, 2008.[1]
Background
On July 2, 2007, the street single "Graveyard Shift" featuring Akon was released. The world premiere of the song was played on Sirius' Hip-Hop Nation channel. "Graveyard Shift" was originally the album's first single, but it was cut from the album's official track list.[1][2] On March 18, 2008, the first official single, "Dangerous", also featuring Akon, was released.[3] "Dangerous" proved to be Kardinal's most successful single to date, peaking at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 2 on the Canadian Hot 100.
In early June 2008, Kardinal released the Limited Time Only mixtape, which features six songs that will appear on the album. One of those songs, "Burnt", featuring Lindo P, was accompanied by a street video on June 30. On July 15, "Burnt" and "Set It Off", featuring Clipse, were released by iTunes;[4] A music video was also released for "Set It Off". The song "Numba 1 (Tide Is High)", featuring Rihanna, is a cover of the reggae song "The Tide Is High".[5] There is also a version featuring Nicole Scherzinger, and the latest version featuring Keri Hilson is the album's second official single.[3]
Kardinal originally got the idea for the album title from a custom-made T-shirt. The T-shirt read "Not 4 Sale", and had a bar code on it. Kardinal stated why he chose Not 4 Sale as the title:
My idea was something provocative—that went beyond gender, went beyond race, went beyond what type of music you're into. And people would literally stop me on the street, telling me how dope the shirt was, how similarly they felt. The concept grew in my head based on that reaction. There's energy you can't buy—the essence of people that can't be bought or bottled, and lives within them. That's how I feel about myself—I can't be bought.[5]
Sales and reception
Approximately 11,869 copies of the album were sold in the United States, in its first week of release.[6] It debuted on the Billboard 200 at #40.[6] In Canada, it debuted at #8 on the Canadian Albums Chart, with 4,247 copies sold in the first week, and was also the #1 R&B/Hip-Hop album in the country. The album received generally favourable reviews from music critics.[7][8][9]
