The first EMC E3A was demonstrator #822 built in September 1938. See A. J. Kristopans EMD Serial Number Home Page http://community-1.webtv.net/ajkristopans/PASSENGERUNITS/. Regular production started in March 1939 as noted in the article and in the Second Diesel Spotter's Guide.
