Lejeune High School is a high school located on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune near Jacksonville, North Carolina. The school is operated by the Department of Defense Education Activity of the United States Department of Defense. It is one of seven in the Camp Lejeune Dependant Schools (CLDS), which include one high school, one middle school, and five elementary schools. [1]
Lejeune High School is the only high school located at Camp Lejeune. Its enrollment averages approximately 510 students, varying from Red Day to Gold Day.[2] The students are dependents of military personnel and must either live on base (either at Camp Lejeune or at Marine Corps Air Station New River) or be on the on a list to get into base housing in order to be eligible to attend LHS.[3]
History
The Early Years
Camp Lejeune was founded in 1941. Lejeune High School was founded in 1944, with the first class to graduate being the Class of 1945. In the early days of Lejeune High School, the school was led by a principal and a Marine Officer.[4] With having Marine Officer as part of the faculty, certain military expectations were expected and adhered to such as grooming standards and locker inspections.
Both Camp Lejeuneand Lejeune High School take their namesakes from John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the United States Marine Corps.

Notes
Its athletic teams are known as the Devilpups, as the majority of the students have family in the Marines, or the Navy, since the Marines do not have their own healthcare and religious services. (Marines are known as devil dogs).[citation needed] The school excels in basketball and Cross Country (2008-2009 Men's Regional Champions) and fields average scholastic wrestling and soccer teams. The 2008-2009 soccer team is set to dominate the Coastal Plains conference with the guidance of the knowledgeable Coach Rivera. Most other athletic accomplishments can be attributed to Coach Childs, lovingly known as "Sausage Fingers," or simply "Tom". [5]
The school is led by a civilian principal. The current principal, since 2007, is Wyyonia Cheviis. The school has come under recent criticism due to its lack of funding and poor management.[citation needed]
