Chonnam National University is generally regarded as one of 4 key major national universities of South Korea together with Seoul National University in Seoul, Pusan National University in Pusan, and Kyungpook National University in Daegu.[citation needed] It is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, which lies in the middle of South Jeolla, or Jeonnam, province, for which the school is named. The current president is Kim, Yoon-Soo. It employs about 1375 professors. In 2003, the university carried an undergraduate enrollment of 18,397, and a graduate enrollment of 3,372. The university is also one of 10 Flagship Korean National Universities.

Academics

Undergraduate offerings are divided among 15 departments: Business Administration, Engineering, Agriculture & Life Sciences, Law, Education, Social Sciences, Human Ecology, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Arts, Medicine, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Dentistry, and the Division of General Studies. Of these, Engineering is by far the most popular, with more than 4,000 enrolled.

Postgraduate offerings are divided between the General Graduate School and five specialized schools offering master's-level degrees.

In 2000, the school was named one of Asia's Best Universities by Asiaweek. [1]

History

The school opened, as a university with five colleges, in 1952. The graduate school was opened in the same year. In 1969 the School of Business Administration was established, followed by the College of Education (undergraduate) in 1971 and the Graduate School of Education in 1979. [2]

In 1980, protests against its closing sparked the Gwangju Massacre.

In March 2006, Yosu National University merged with Chonnam National University.[3]

Sister schools

The university maintains international ties with schools in 18 countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, China, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.[4]
