Zong is the global mobile payment division [1] of mobile monetization company, Echovox [2]. Zong is an international mobile payments platform, connected with 67 mobile operators in 13 countries, enabling consumers to buy online goods and services with their cell phones.
Zong is a widely used payment solution on Social Networks and Online Games as well as on mobile devices. Zong appeals to a younger demographic, who doesn't have bank accounts or credit cards and want to complete small purchases online. Consumers can simply pay with their mobile device and are then charged on their account through their mobile operators. Zong is particularly successful in conjunction with the purchase of online virtual goods.[3][4][5]
Zong ties with mobile operators allows it to charge mobile subscribers through its short codes with Premium SMS, or event based billing. The company claims higher conversion rates than credit card payments [6], but transaction costs are still particularly high compared to other electronic payments[7].
