Template:Communitypage It is possible for a developer to alter the database such that an edit which was attributed to an anonymous IP address is attributed to a username. This is usually requested because either:

  • An editor contributes anonymously for a while, and then creates a username and wants their previous edits attributed to their new name; or
  • A user accidentally logged out before making an edit

If a user changes from one username to another and wishes all their old edits to be attributed to the new name, see Wikipedia:Changing username.

If you wish to change the attribution of an edit in this way, place a request below using the same IP address as you used to make the edit. This is so that we can be sure the IP address was really the user in question. In some cases, an IP address from the same dial-up ISP will be sufficient. Also include the target username, and a link to the diff.

Developers reserve the right to deny requests if they feel that there is any reason to doubt the identity of the contributor.

Procedure

  1. Get on the same computer you were on when you made the edit
  2. Log out
  3. Make your request by editing this page
  4. Log in
  5. Confirm the request by editing this page again

Instructions for developers

  • Log on to pliny
  • Get the script from ~tstarling/attribute.php
  • Run it with something like php attribute.php en 216.103.211.240 "Daniel Quinlan"
  • cat attribute.log and copy it to the wiki log page
  • Review the log for sanity
  • Comment out or delete entries in attribute.sql if necessary
  • Run sql-wikipedia en < attribute.sql (or some other database)

I, User:Psychonaut, edited the article on Saskatchewan on 10:34, 28 May 2003 from IP 80.244.97.71, before I had registered.

Strange. I requested edit changes on the previous page, that edits fromUser:66.153.56.194 be directed to me, and it looked like the request was taken care of, as that IP address is indeed a red link on that page (and this one), but at Talk:Technological escalation, my first edit is still listed as User:66.153.56.194 as a valid link ... and if you click on it there are many edits listed.
