Tambaram Town is situated 24 K.M. south of the Capital City of Chennai. The famous Grand Southern Trunk Road and Railway route from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari divide the town into east and West. The Municipal Town, Tambaram is described as Gateway of the Beautiful Metropolitan City, Chennai.
Tambaram is very popular because of the existence of world-renowned Madras Christian College, IAF training center, and the first commissioned suburban trains from Tambaram to Beach. Nowadays almost all trains to southern parts of Tamil Nadu start only from Tambaram. This Municipal Town is also proud of being home to a number of industrial units established at the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ). The units in the MEPZ export various items to several foreign countries thereby earning foreign exchange for the country.
Tambaram is one of the busiest towns in and around Chennai with extensive transport facilities. Tambaram Town is also well known for its reputed educational institutions.
Prior to 1964, Tambaram was a small Panchayat. In 1964 it was constituted as Grade III Municipality comprising the Village Panchayats of Pulikoradu, Irumbliyur, Selaiyur. Due to rapid development and growth of the town commercially and residentially, the Municipality is now classified as a Selection Grade Municipality. The population as per 2001 census is 1,33,667 besides a floating population of more than 1 lakh per day. The extent of the municipality is 20.72 sq.km.
The Municipality gets an income of about Rs 465.00 lakhs per annum, out of which nearly Rs 362.00 lakhs is spent towards meeting the basic needs of Water Supply, Electricity and other civic amenities such as laying and maintenance of roads (100.403 KM in length at present). The Highways also maintains Block Tapped Roads to a length of 9.80 KM.
To cope with the increasing need of basic amenities, the Municipal Town is evincing keen interest in developing the Quality and Quantity of the essential amenities that are enjoyed by the public.
Tambaram is a place some 27 km from Chennai city in Tamil Nadu, India. It is an urban node. It has a bustling market which caters to the population of southern Chennai. It has a military Airforce station and houses one of the Flying (Instructors) Training School of the Indian Air Force. Tambaram is a hub to all major destinations to the south Tamil Nadu as it lies on the busy Chennai–Trichy national highway.
Some of the prominent organisations found in Tambaram are the Sivananda Orphanage, the MCC (Madras Christian College) and a number of engineering colleges. The Arignar Anna Zoological Park, located in Vandalur near Tambaram houses some rare species of wild flora and fauna and is famous throughout India.
It is also a major center for district marketing with MEPZ (Madras Export Processing Zone).
