Lardal is a municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway. It is divided into the parishes Svarstad, Styrvoll and Hem.
The parish of Laurdal was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt).
The name
The Norse form of the name was Lagardalr. The first element is the genitive case of lögr m 'water; river' (here Numedalslågen). The last element is dalr m 'valley, dale'. (See also > Larvik and Lårdal.)
Until 1889 the name was written "Laurdal".
