History
The first club transmediale festival was billed as a fusion of electronic music, video, motion graphics and visual art, connecting club culture, contemporary art and academic context. It showcased the Berlin scene in the newly founded Maria am Ostbahnhof club, profiling labels such as the legendary Chain Reaction and Payola as well as the Dutch label Staalplaat. It was founded by Jan Rohlf, Marc Weiser and Lillevän Pobjoy (Rechenzentrum), Remco Schuurbiers and Timm Ringewaldt as a parallel event to the Transmediale Festival.
Between 2000 and 2005, club transmediale quickly grew into an independent entity held over periods of up to 13 days 2003 with many satellite events around the city of Berlin, including performances and large scale installations. The festival has workshop and panel discussion elements and has become a central spoke of the European and International scene for professionals and enthusiasts alike, with partners including Mutek, TodaysArt, Dis-Patch, and Garage Festival Stralsund.
Club transmediale has changed venue several times. In 1999 it opened in the Berlin Club Maria am Ostbahnhof. In 2000, it was held in an empty floor of the Haus des Lehrers building on Alexanderplatz, in 2002 it was in E-Werk, one of the major Techno Clubs of Berlin in the early 90s. Since 2003, the festival has been back at Maria am Ostbahnhof, with satellite events at various venues such as the Volksbühne on Rosa Luxemburg Platz, the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in Kreuzberg and others.
The festival is now produced and curated by DISK - Sound and Image Initiative, founded in 2005, an independent collective of artists and curators including Jan Rohlf, Remco Schuurbiers, and Oliver Baurhenn. The festival has received project funding from Hauptstadtkulturfonds and the Kulturstiftung des Bundes.

GENDERTRONICS – DER KÖRPER IN DER ELEKTRONISCHEN MUSIK
Edited by club transmediale and Meike Jansen
When, in the early 50s, electronic music appeared on the scene with the promise of abandoning all physical limits of music-making this was – like much besides – a Promethian male fantasy. Indeed, this music subsequently led to everything but disembodiment. From the psychedelic trances of the 60s and Kraftwerk robotics of the 70s, through to Techno ecstasies, gender-political interventions in the 90s and laptop performance – the questions as to how, from whom, to what ends and in which contexts electronics and the human body might be cable-linked have continually had to be addressed anew.
“Gendertronics” is an in-depth study of questions raised by last year’s festival theme, "Performing Sound", edited by CTM and Meike Jansen and published by Edition Suhrkamp. With contributions from Olaf Arndt, Claudia Basrawi, Jochen Bonz & Thomas Meinecke, Mariola Brillowska, Kurt Dahlke, Diedrich Diederichsen, Harald Fricke, Tom Holert, Miss Kittin, Pinky Rose, Birgit Richard, Terre Thaemlitz, Marc Weiser and 17 black and white drawings by Jan Rohlf. – In German language only.
