Kananaskis is situated about 80km west of Calgary, Alberta in the foothills and first ranges of the Rocky Mountains.

There are many recreational activities in this area, including skiing, hiking, mountain biking, scrambling guide book, climbing trad climbing alpine climbing sport climbing and backpacking.

There is some development in the park, including a golf course, some hotels, two ski resorts (one the site of the 1988 Winter Olympics and built specifically for it) a holliday ranch, two gas stations and a village near Kananaskis Lakes.

The Eastern border of the park abutts the Stoney Indians reservation. Past the Western border is Canmore, Alberta before reacing Banff National Park.
