Northwest High School is a public high school in Jackson, Michigan in the United States of America. The school's principal is Scott Buchler.[1]
History
Established in 1954, the Northwest Community School District is one of the largest districts in Jackson County. The district includes approximately 144 square miles (370 km2) and serves 3,600 students in kindergarten through twelfth grade and another 600 children and adults through an extensive Childcare and Adult & Community Education Program. The district currently employs over 300 staff members.
The name of the school (Northwest) likely comes from its position in the Northwest portion of Jackson county. There are other school districts in the county that similarly have directional names. The school chose as its mascot the well-known figure of the Northwest Territories--the Mounties. Fittingly with this mascot, the school colors are red and black. The school purchased a mascot costume in 2008, which can now be seen at many athletic events in the district.
Extracurricular Activities
The Northwest High School athletic program has a winning tradition. An examination of the school's athletic area testifies to a long and successful program.
Northwest has a well-respected music department. Both the bands and choirs regularly receive superior ratings at festivals. Each spring, the band and choir come together and put on a collage concert which follows the format of the University of Michigan School of Music's collage concert. This concert displays the both the large sound of Northwest bands and choirs and the impressive talent of Northwest individuals.
