According to the RIAA, Carey has been certified for shipments of 62.5 million albums in the U.S.[14] She ranks third in RIAA album certifications among female artists, behind Barbra Streisand (71 million) and Madonna (63.5 million).[14]

As of September 2008, Nielsen SoundScan reported that Carey had sold 51,370,000 million albums in the U.S. since the inception of sales tracking in March 1991, making her the third-biggest-selling artist of the SoundScan era[15].[16] Sales through BMG Music Club accounted for an additional 3 million as of February 2003.[17] Carey's debut album had been certified platinum four times in the U.S. before the commencement of SoundScan tracking.[18]
