Song |
"Diva" is a song by American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles, recorded for her third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce. The song was later chosen as official third single and was produced by Bangladesh and Sean Garrett.
The music video was shot in late November and directed by Melina Matsoukas, who worked with Knowles for several music videos.
Background
"Diva" greatly resembles the song "A Milli" by Lil Wayne. This is because of the fact that both are produced by the same producer Bangladesh. In an interview with Myspace, Beyoncé was asked if she made it so that both songs sound so alike or to be a female counterpart to "A Milli" because of Lil Wayne's song "Comfortable" which resembles Irreplaceable. However she stated that it was only because of the same producers and not done intentionally, however if it is taken as the female counterpart to "A Milli" than that's fine.
So far, the only cover of the song has been made by recording artist, Ciara.[1]
Music Video
The music video premiered on iTunes around midnight (EST) on Monday, December 22 simultaneously with the "Halo" video.[2] The video begins with a dictionary description of the word "diva". The video then cuts to a black and white scene outside in a parking lot with mannequin parts inside the trunk of a Cadillac. Beyoncé is seen walking in heels around the car in slow motion with her famed introductions to the dangle shades. Beyoncé then walks into a warehouse where she is in a different outfit with two backup dancers. During the second verse Beyoncé switches outfits again and is pulling on two chains. When she states "Diva's gettin' money..." she waves a fan made of $100 bills. During the bridge to the climax Beyoncé dances on a single light and then during the climax Beyoncé is seen very sweaty in another wardrobe choice dancing in robotic movements to the beat with gold punctuating the black and white scene. During the last chorus, Beyoncé is in her last wardrobe change in front of window which is where the paparazzi had taken photos of her. It has been noted that the same exact dress worn by Beyoncé when she is on the window was worn by Jennifer Lopez in a photoshoot for Cannes in 1998. When the song ends, the instrumentals to "Video Phone" play while Beyoncé struts in the parking lot again. As she lights her cigar she throws the lighter into the trunk with the mannequins and starts to walk away as the vehicle explodes behind her as the beginning to "Video Phone" plays.
Chart Performance
Initially, the song charted on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100, reaching number 5. Finally, on December 24, the song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, debuting at #96. The song reached #26 on the U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, which is her highest non-single song to chart. The song will be officially released January 2009 alongside with Halo.
