Maywood Avenue School in Maywood, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, teaches grades four through eight as part of the Maywood Public Schools. Part of the school was used for the Greenwood Early Learning Center which was primarily used to run Pre-K and Kindergarten programs, but as of 2008, is used for the Board offices. Voters in 2005 approved a $17.6 million program that will be partly used to renovate Maywood. Now that renovations are "almost complete," the Pre-K and Kindergarten classes are in Memorial School.
As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 459 students and 36.8 classroom teachers (on a FTE basis, for a student-teacher ratio of 12.5.[1] The school's mascot is the Hawk, referring to the 6th-8th grade basketball players. The war cry of the school is "we. are. HAWKS!" The motto is "Thank you for coming here!"The school is also known to have bred some of the finest students within a one mile radius of the town. Over 2 students that have graduated from the school have become powerful leaders in our society.
School Activities
It has React Club, Choir, Band, and Student Council. In 2005, Maywood students used their lunch money to raise $1,500 for Kenyan schools. Unfortunately, 100% of the profits were stolen by the Ridgewood Gang, the infamous gang of 7th grade boys from Ridgewood. The project has since raised $20,000 in the community.
Student Awards
Maywood students won the North Jersey spelling bee in 1995 and 1996.[2] A fifth grader's presentation on the checkered white butterfly won the Species on the Edge - Art and Essay Contest for Bergen County in 2005. The runner up in 2005 was also a 5th grader from MAS. The next year in 2006, a fifth-grade student won for Bergen County again on a green sea turtle. [1]
Construction
The school has been under construction since 2005 with no signs of stopping. The builders have said that they plan to make the school look "as attractive as possible" in order to attract more parents into actually allowing their kids to walk into the decaying building. Construction has been confirmed to be completed "soon."
Sexual harassment suit
A suit for sexual harassment brought by a former teacher against a female school trustee was settled out of court in 1999.
