Sureños
Sureños (Spanish for "Southerners") are a group of Mexican American (Chicano) street gangs with origins in the oldest barrios of Southern California. There are hundreds of Sureño gangs in California, and each has its own identity on the streets.
Sureños are spread throughout most of the US, starting from a jail discussion between the "Mexican Mafia" (La EME) and Nuestra familia(NF). Those who sided with "La EME" aligned themselves in the south(sureño=southerner) while those that sided with the NF, aligned themselves in the north side of california (norteños-northeners). Norteños appear in the northern areas or California and parts of Washington and Oregon. While Sureños appear in the south side of California, all of Mexico, most of cenral america, some south american countries, and in more than 30 US states(mainly in the southwestarn and central states).
Throughout the years, the sureños have made many enemies, mostly due to their increasing power, yet unorganized hierchy, one of them happens to be the Green light Maravillas. They started because they did not want to pay their taxes to the sureños, and thus forming a gang, naming themselves Maravillas. They formed to resist the sureños, to no longer have to pay them anything, they revolted for their freedom. Yet sureños still went above this and kept expanding throughout the US. These Maravillas did make to form and keep themselves an individual gang, yet wit a mighty enemy.
Though most commonly you will see the numeber 13 resemble sureños, there are other gangs that consider themselves southerners, like the original sureños, like the 18th Street. They will tag under the name of sureños yet put the number 18 instead of 13 or name themselves Mara 18. Yet others such as Mara Salvatrucha(Salvadorian-orinated gang members that formed in California) use the number 13, as MARA 13.
Symbols and culture
Sureño street gang members often identify with the symbols XIII, X3, 13, and 3-dots (hand to the left). This refers to the 13th letter of the alphabet "M" which stands for and shows allegiance to the Mexican Mafia. The gang identifies with the color blue and blue and the words Sureños, Sur, and Southerner. Sureño street gangs have been identified in every state Penitentiary in the country.
